Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
VICTOR LABELLE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SOFA-BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vroron LABELLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to combination furniture, and more particularly to that class of furniture popularly known as sofa beds.
Broadly speaking, it comprises two sections hinged together and adapted, in one position to form a bed, and in another position to form a sofa or lounge, and head rests hinged to posts of the furniture and adapted to be turned out of the way when the furniture is to be used as a bed only.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several views of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front View of the combination piece folded to form a sofa with the back rest in position Fig. 2 is a similar View with the backrest removed and the head-rests swung up to allow unfolding of the combination piece; Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an end View showing the com bination piece completely unfolded to form a bed; and, Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a lower boXlike frame in which is secured, either rigidly or removably, a series of slats or a slatted frame 2 upon which a mattress may be supported. To the rear edge of the boX frame 1 are fixed the end posts 3 and the stops 4. To the upward edge of the box frame 1 is hinged a second similar boX frame 5 carrying a similar slatted frame 2 and adapted, through its hinged connection, to fold back upon the first boX frame 1, as shown in Fig. 3. At two corners of the frame 5 are placed pins 6. The pins 6 are adapted to fit into sockets 8 in the under edges of the swinging head-rests 9 which are hinged to the upper ends of the posts 3, thus Specification of Letters Patent.

holding the head-rests in position and preventing twisting of their hinges.
When the frames 1 and 5 have been folded together the l1ead-rests are swung back into the position shown in Fig. 1 and the back rest 11 is placed against the stops 4, the cushion 10 being placed between the stop strip 7 and the back rest. For supporting the frame 5, feet 12 are secured, either rigidly or pivotally, to the lower outer edge of the same. Of course, when the furniture is used as a sofa these feet will be at the back of the same.
It is clear that many changes may be made in the construction of the several parts, many rearrangements of these parts, and many other combinations of them, and many substitutions for them may be made without in any way departing from the field and scope of the invention and it is meant to include all such within this application, wherein only apreferred form has been shown and described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined sofa-bed of the character described, comprising two frames hinged together and adapted to be folded together in superposed position to form a sofa and unfolded to form a bed, posts secured to one of said frames and extending upward to a height equal to that of the two frames when folded together, head rests pivotally con nected to the tops of said posts and adapted to be swung rearwardly, stops secured to one of said frames, and a removable back rest adapted to be supported by said stops.
2. A combined sofa-bed of the character described, comprising two frames hinged together and adapted to be folded together in superposed position to form a sofa and unfolded to form a bed, posts secured to one of said frames and extending upward to a height equal to that of the two frames when folded together, head rests pivotally connected to the tops of said posts and adapted to be swung rearwardly therefrom, stops secured to one of said frames, a removable back rest adapted to be supported by said stops, and a stop strip secured to the other of said frames.
3. A combined sofa-bed of the character described, comprising two frames hinged together and adapted to be folded together in su erposed position to form a sofa and unceived in said sockets to hold the aforesaid 10 f0 ded to form a bed, posts secured to one of head rests in position. said frames and extending u award to a In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my height equal to that of the two frames when hand in the presence of two witnesses.
