CHAIR AND CRIB.
SPECIFICATION fOIming part Of Letters Patent NO. 560,046, dated May 12, 1896.
Application filed July 1'7, 1895. Serial No. 556,263. (No model.)
T 0 @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EMILY R. RITTER, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs and Cribs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to chairs and cribs, and the object thereof is to provide a combination chair and crib which may be used as either when desired, and which is simple in construction and operation and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a side elevation of myeombined chair and crib when extended for use as a crib; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation showing the device folded for use as a chair; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. l; Fig. 4, a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, an end elevation of the construction shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 6 a similar view showing the parts folded as in Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I employ a chair consisting of a back A, which may be ornamented in any desired manner or in any desired form, and secured to the back A are sides B, also of any desired form, and on the tops of which are placed arms or rests C,which extend outward, as shown in Fig. l. The back A is provided with legs or supports D, and hinged to the fronts of the sides B are supplemental or auxiliary sides E, provided with legs F, the hinged connection between the sides being shown at G. As thus constructed the sides E maybe turned outwardly and folded backwardly under the arms C, as shown in Fig. G, in which position my improvement may be used as a chair, or they may be extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, in which position it will constitute a safe and convenient crib. The sides B of the chair are provided with a bottom G, of wire-mesh or similar material, and the sides E when extended are provided with a bottom frame K, having a bottom portion L, of wire-mesh or similar material, and hinged to the front side thereof is a plate M, which is adapted to be folded vertically, as shown in Fig. 3, and constitutes a foot-board for the crib, or when the parts are placed together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, to depend in front of the chair, as shown in said figures, and the bottom frame K is adapted to slide in over the bottom Gr. Vhen the sides E are extended, the frame K rests upon supports N, connected therewith, and when the sides are folded into the position shown in Figs. 2, et, and G the bottom frame K is taken out and placed over the bottom G of the chair and the mattresses O and O placed together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
Connected with the outer endsof the sides E are hooks P, which are adapted to engage with loops or eyes R, connected with the footboard M, and hold it in the vertical position shown in Fig. 5, or said hooks may be detached from said loops or eyes and the footboard maybe lowered into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
By means of my invention I combine two useful andindispensable articles of household furniture, which may be used as an easy or comfortable chair or seat, or, when desired, converted into a safe, substantial, and comfortable crib, and can easily be placed within the reach of those in medium circumstances. It is so constructed that it requires close scrutiny to discover what it really is, and the cushions or mattresses being separable and removable makes the drawing out of the ou ter portion an easy matter.
The bottom G may be secured in position in any desiredmanner, and the sides B and E may be of any desired form or construction, and, as will be observed, when the sides E are folded beneath the arms C the tops thereof are concealed and the entire device is neat and substantial and may be ornamented as required. The cushions or mattresses may also be hinged together, if preferred, and the separate bottoms G and K may also be united in the same manner, and it is evident that other changes in the form, construction, com- IOO bination, and arrangement of the various parts of my improved Combination Chair and Crib may be made Without departing,` from the spirit of my invention or saoriieing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having` fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The Combination of a back A, the sides B secured thereto, arms C on top of said sides, the supplemental sides E, hinged to the front of the sides B and adapted to be extended EMILY R. RITTER.
