vUNITED STATES GUSTAV GOLDSCHMIDT,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
cHAlR-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,153, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed June 17, 1890.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAv GoLDsoHMIDT, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Empire, residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Beds; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a reclining-chair the back of which leans back- Ward and the seat of which folds up from the front.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 show the chair as such, being front and side views, respectively. Fig. 3 is a side View of the chair changed into a bed.
The chair consists of the back A, the seat B, the arms or side rails C, and the feet D. The part b is rigidly attached to the feet or legs D, and constitutes the middle of the bed when the device is unfolded. The side rails b' of the seat are hinged at el to said part b, and to these rails are secured the arm-standards c, which also constitute the legs of one end of the bed. The foot portion b2 of the bed is hinged to the rails b', and is adapted to fold under the seat when the device is in the form of a chair, Fig. 2.
The top rails of the arms are shown at c', and are hinged at a to the back A. They are Serial No. 355,770.' (No model.)
separably connected with the arm-standards, as by doWels c2, on lthe one part fitting into corresponding holes in the other part, and can be turned back to form legs for the back A, Fig. h is a transverse bar at the juncture of the back and seat; e e',`bars at or near the pivots d, and 71, a bar at outer ends of rails b.
To change the device from a chair to a bed, the rails c are turned back to form legs `for the head of the bed. The seat portion is turned over to form the foot of the bed, supported by legs c, and the foot-board b2 is turned up.
In a chair-bed, the combination, with the legs D and back part A, of the collapsible parts of the seat b b and the side supports C, each in two parts, the parts c of which are pivotally connected with said back part and form a support therefor and the parts c of which are rigidly connected With the lpvoted part b of the seat and form supports therefor, substantially as specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
GUSTAV GOLDSCHMIDT.
