SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,661, dated August 18,1885.
(No model.)
ence marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to a chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective view indicating the two folding see-- tions and legs in position about to be seated. Fig. 3 is a perspective view indicating the folding see-tions and their respective supports arranged to afford a lounge. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through Fig. 1, taken inthe plane indicated by dotted line x w.
My invention relates `to a novel combination of a chair with a folding lounge; and it consists in the combination of devices which will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A designates a frame in the shape of a chair. a is the back; c a, the arms; a3, the legs, and a* one of the side bars of said frame.
Practically this chair may be constructed like any well-known arm-chair, with one arrn omitted, and with a solid or perforated seat, A.
To the side bar, a", I hinge or pivot in a suitable manner one of the folding sections, which I now letter B. This section is hinged at b in a plane parallel to the horizontal plane ofthe upper surface of the seat A', so that when it is folded, as shown in Fig. 1, it will lie closely thereupon. This section Bis a rectangular frame, and may be upholstered in any suitable manner. For eompaetness I prefer touse rattan, as in cane-seat chairs, for example. To the free transverse portion of this section B, I hinge or pivot at c another section, G, to the bar c of which is rigidly attached the arm a2, which is perpendicular to the plane of the section G, and which is constructed to iit the ehair-framewhen in the position indicated in Fig. 1.
It will be observed that the hinges 2 1 o' are on opposite sides of the folding sections B C, by which means the section Bwill lie beneath Section C when the couch is converted into a seat, as shown in Fig. 1.
D D designate legs, which are between the hinges Z) c, and which are hinged at d, so as to fold inward, or toward the chairfrarne A. These legs support the section B when it is in the position indicated in Fig. 3. y
C G indicate legs, which are hinged [at e beneath the arm a2, and which also fold inward. Y
It will be observed that I have a lounge which is composed of several sections pivotally united in such manner that they can be-folded coinpaetly upon a chair-seat. It will also be observed that there is afforded a head and foot rest for the lounge, and that one of said rests constitutes4 one arm of the cha-ir when the sections are folded, as shown in Fig. 1.
Each folding section is provided with its own individual folding leg, which, with the sections, affords a solid support for the same as a seat.
It is obvious that lounges or seats may be constructed, as above described, of numerons folding sections, and that the sections may be arranged onA one or both sides of the frame Awith or without a back-support.
I ani aware that both folding and extensible seats have been combined with chairbodies, so that either a chair or a couch may be formed at will, and such I do not claim, broadly.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new is* 1. The combination, with a chair, A, provided with a single arm, a', of the sections B and C, the former of which is hinged to the chair-seat o'n the edge opposite its single arm, and the latter is hinged to the opposite edge of the' former, and is provided with a chairarm, a?, which, when the sections B and C are folded upon the chair-seat, will stand in posi- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as io tion on the chair on the side of the' same opmy own Iafx mysignature in presence of tivo posite the arm a, substantially as specified. Witnesses.
2. The combination,wth the chair-body A, 5 provided With the seat A', legs a3, and single JESSE A. CRANDALL.
arm a', of the hinged section B, provided With i the folding legs D, and the hinged section C, Witnesses: provided with folding legs C', and chain-arm JOHN D. WULFF, a2, substantially as specified. N oAH TEBBETTS.
