Description

April 21, 1953 A. PELLICCIONE CONVERTIBLE BED AND ARMCHAIR COMBINATION Filed Dec. 30. 1949 ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 21, 1953 CONVERTIBLE BED AND ARMCHAIR COMBINATION Amadeu Pelliccione, Rio de 'Janeiro, Brazil Application V .1 The present invention relates to convertible furniture and is particularly directed to'an armchair which is easily and simply converted into a bed.
' Many types of armchairs convertible into beds have heretofore been proposed, however, these convertible armchairs have generally been provided with fixed armrests and the conversion of such an armchair into a bed has been usually accomplished by means of complex mechanisms requiring comparatively expensive parts and being difiicult to operate.
An object of the present invention is to provide an armchair which converts into a bed and is simple and inexpensive in construction as well-as easy to operate.
Another object is to provide an armchair which is convertible into a bed and wherein the chair arm assembly, on which the users forearms or elbows may rest, is swingably mounted to support a head board assembly when the armchair is converted into a bed. 1
.The above and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent in the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof which is to be read in connection withthe accompanying drawings forming aparthereof and wherein:
Fig. l -is a perspective view of an armchair constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown in condition to serveas an armchair; r
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame of the armchair of Fig. 1 shown in an intermediate position during the conversion of that armchair into a bed; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the armchair of Fig. 1 shown in condition to serve as a bed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the illustrated embodiment of the invention includes a double-bottomed base II which is open at one end and has side members 5 extending along the opposite sides thereof. The base I! is supported on suitable legs 2 I and at its closed end is hingedly connected to the lower end of a chair back member I, for example, by the hinges I8. The chair back member I is formed with a transversely extending cavity 2 in the back surface thereof and adjacent its free end. A pair of legs 3 are foldably pivoted within the cavity 2 to swing between positions nested within the cavity (Fig. 1) and positions extending from the back member I (Figs. 2 and 3) for supporting the latter in the plane of the base I1 when the back member I is lowered to provide the foot portion of a bed.
December 30, 1949, Serial No. 135,862 In Brazil May 16, 1949 2 Claims. (01. 1 55-49) In accordance with the present invention, theend by a cross-piece I3 to form a U-shaped assembly II). A swingable support member I5 is provided for each of the arm rests II and I2. Each of the support members I6 is fixed at one end to the related arm rest adjacent the end of the latter remote from the cross-piece I3, and at'its other end each supportmember I6 is pivotally mounted on the "related side member 5 adjacent the open end of the base H. A stop member 6 is secured to the inner side of each of the supportmembers I5 and is formed with an inclined lower edge Ia which is adapted to abut against an inclined end edge 'Ib formed onthe related side member 5 for supporting themembers I6 in vertical positions. When the support members I6 are verticallydisposed, the arm rests II and I2 are arranged horizontally, and the cross-piece I3 is positioned in back-of the chair back member I to hold the latter in an elevated, back forming position (Fig. 1). If desired, dowels I4 and I5 may be extended from the back surface of the chair back member I (Fig. 2) to underlie the cross-piece I3 when the latter is arranged to hold the member I in its elevated position thereby further complementing the abutting surfaces la and lb in holding the arm rests II an I2 horizontal.
A board member'IQ extends slidably into the base- II through the open end of the latter and has an extension 20 hinged to its outer end (Fig. 2). The hinged extension '20 is foldable on top of the board member IQ for storage with the latter within the base ll. As seen in Fig. 2, the arm rests II and I2 are provided with stops 22 secured to the under surfaces thereof. When the chair arm assembly is pivoted to a position in which the arm rests 'II and I2 are vertically disposed (Fig. 3), the board member I9 may be withdrawn from the base I1 and its outer end supported on the stops 22. The hinged extension 20 may then be pivoted upwardly to a vertical position and rested against the vertically disposed arm rests II and I2 to provide a head board, as in Fig. 3.
The support members I6 are preferably fixed to the arm rests II and I2 at locations on the latter spaced from the ends of the arm rests remote from the cross-piece I3 so that the portions of the arm rests between said ends remote from the cross-piece and the support members I6 constitute leg members to support the members IS in horizontal positions and with the extended board member I9 parallel to the base I'I.
In converting the armchair of 1' into: a1.
bed, the arm rests H and I2 are pivoted upwardly and forwardly to theirzverticalpositionsand the freed back member, I is lowered to its. horizontal position and supported on the' legs 3. The board member 19 is then withdrawn from its stored position within the base; H; to form the head portion Off the bed, and the extension: 20.is pivoted. upwardly to its position against the arm rests to i provide ,a head. board, With thevariouspartsoithe armchair frame disposedasindicated above,v a. cushion. is. disposed on each of. the back member. I, the base. l'l and the board member: l9 to-provide armattress,.as in. Fig; 3.
While I have.described.andillustrateda .partic ular; embodiment. of my invention, it is,to be; understood that-theinventionis not limitedto.v the precise details thereof: and that various changes and modifications may be made thereinv without...departing.; from. the; scope of the ,inven: tion as defined in the. appended: claims.
