1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination furniture and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying anovel construction and arrangement whereby said device may be used either as a foot stool or table.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide, in an article of combination furniture comprising a stool and a table, novel means for connecting said table to said stool and for supporting said table either in operative or inoperative position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an article of furniture of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an embodiment of the invention, showing the table in lowered position.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevational View, showing the table in raised position.
Figure 4 is a view in front elevation thereof.
3 Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a stool of suitable dimensions and material which is designated generally by the reference numeral l. The
stool 8 includes suitable supporting legs 2 and a cushion or upholstered top 3. Rigidly secured on the sides of the stool I, adjacent the front thereof, is a pair or arcuate metallic plates 4 of substantially the shape shown to advantage in Figs. 1
and 2 of the drawings. The purpose of the plate 4 will be presently set forth.
The reference numeral 5 designates generally a table which is mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the stool l. The table 5 comprises a pair of supporting brackets 6 on which a top I is mounted. The lower side of the top i is provided with a suitable cushion 8.
The brackets 6 are pivotally connected to the sides of the stool i adjacent the plates 3, as at 9. The pivoted ends of the brackets 6 are formed to provide shoulders Ill which, as best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, are engageable with one end of the plates 4 for supporting the table 5 in raised or operative position.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. When it is desired to use the device as a foot stool, the table 5 is swung down- 10 wardly to an out-of-the-way-position as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings where it is supported by the plates engaged beneath the brackets 5.
It will be noted that the plates i conform substantially to the shape of the adjacent portions of 15 the brackets 6 with which said plates are adapted to contact. With the table 5 in this position, the device may also be used as a chair, said table 5 functioning as a cushioned or upholstered back. When it is desired to use the table 5 as such, said 0 table is swung upwardly to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings where it is supported by the shoulders ill engaged with the forward ends of the plates 4. With the table 5 in this position the stool I may be used as a seat, the occupant placing his legs beneath the table.
It is believed that the many advantages of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of 30 the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a stool, a table mounted for swinging movement on said stool, said table including supporting brackets pivotally connected to the sides of the stool, and coacting means on the stool and the brackets for supporting the table in operative or inoperative position, said coacting means including elongated plates mounted on the sides of the stool and engageable longitudinally beneath the brackets for supporting the table in inoperative position, and shoulders on the pivoted ends of the brackets engageable with one end of the plates for supporting the table in operative position.
