To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAY C. TALMAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Apollo, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Bed and Chair, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to convertible chairs and has for its principal object the provision of 'an article of furniture of this kind which will possess all of the features of a rocking chair or a reclining chair of the Morris type and at the same time possess other structural differences which will permit the chair to be converted into a bed-like structure.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a convertible chair in which the several parts thereof can be adjusted easily and quickly when it is desired to change the character or form of the structure.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a chair of this kind in which the several parts thereof can be quickly separated from each other and fully exposed to permit the same to be cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition.

And a still further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of the above indicated character, which is simple in construction, durable, efficient for the purpose intended, and one that can be manufactured at a. relatively low cost.

These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention, showing same in a position adapted to be employed as a rocking ohair.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of my improved article of furniture, showing same in a position adapted to be employed when using same as a bed.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the seat of the chair, showing the underside of same extended to provide'a foot rest.

Figure 4 is a similar view showing the foot rest in an assembled position.

Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on line 55 of Figure 3, and

Figure 6 is a vertical section taken on line 66 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different Views. In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates my improved article of furniture, and 2 the back rest which is hingedly connected to the seat as at 3. The seat and back rest are supported on rockers 4. The numeral 5 indicates the arm rests which. are mounted on standards 6 and attached to the rear side of i the rear standards is an arcuate retaining element 7, which is provided with arcuate slots 8, in which is adapted to be received a rod 9 carried by the back rest 2, so that varlous positions of the back rest can be made to permit the use of the chair as a combination rocker and Morris chair.

lVhen desiring to use my improved article of furniture as a bed, the back rest 2 is moved to the position indicated in Figure 2, and hinged legs 10 carried by the back of the back rest are moved to an operative position and held so by means of braces 11. Mounted under the seat 1 looking from the front of same is a drawer 12, which slides in grooves 13. The sides of the drawer 12 have hingedly connected thereto as at 14 extended side walls 15, which are adapted to be raised and moved to the position indicated in Figure 5 when the drawer is withdrawn from beneath the seat 2. It is to be understood that when the board 16 is placed in the position shown in Figure 3, that same holds the extensions 15 in the position shown in Figure 5.

In order to prevent the seat and back 2 from breaking at the hinged joint 8 when the article of furniture is used as a bed, a
