Thisinvention relates to a contour chair which has a padded seat and in which either the entire padded seat portion of the chair or a part of that seat may be moved from its. normal resting position in the bottom of the chair to a position either somewhat elevated from the seat of the chair and forwardly of its normal position, or it may be swung so that the seat is entirely forward of the chair. In this manner, a contour chair may be provided in which: the legs. of the user are elevated or the user may recline in the chair.
An object of my invention is toprovide a contour chair in which the padded or upholstered seat of the chair is so mounted that itcan be swung upwardly and forwardly above the level of the bottom or frame of the chair.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel contour chair of the character stated, in which there is provided a movable padded seat cushion, the chair structure below this seat-cushion being also padded or upholstered so that in use as a contour chair the user is provided with an upholstered or padded seat portion.
Anotherobject of my invention is to provide a novel contourchair inwhich the upholstered seat portion of thechair also includes a part of the back of the chair, the back portion of the seat being recessed into the back of the chair in one positionof said seat portion.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may. appear from the accompanying drawing, the. subjoined detailed description. and the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a contour chair embodying my invention and with the parts in position of a normal living room chair.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but with parts broken away to show the mounting means for the seat portion.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a contour chair embodying my invention and showing the seat portion swung upwardly and forwardly from its normal position.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of my contour chair with the parts in extended position so that the user assumes a reclining position.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of mounting means for the seat cushion.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of a contour chair in which the seat cushion also includes a part of the upholstered back of the chair.
Figure '7 is a side elevation of the form of chair shown in Figure 6, and with the seat portion swung forwardly.

Referring more particularly to. the drawing, the numeral 1 indicatesthe usual chair frame or base which also may. include arms 2, if, desired. These arms. rise from the base. I in the usual. and well known manner. The top or seat portion 3 of the base is paddedorupholstered for a reason.- to be subsequently described. The upholstered: area 3. is approximately one-half of. the normal heightofiaseatof a chair, the purpose of' this arrangement being that when the seat cushionor'pad, to-be subsequently described, is. placed on the seat portion 3', then a. normal chair height is obtained.

A seatcushion e, is mounted. on thebase I; by meansof a pair of strapsor links; 9,.the upper end of each of the links being pivotally attached to the cushion 8 and the lower end of the link being pivotally secured to the frame I, as shown at I0, the pivot Ill being a hinge or pivot as shown in Figures 9 or 10. The upper face of the seat 8 is padded or upholstered, as shown at I l, and in the position of the cushion shown in Figures 1 and 2 the chair has the appearance of a usual living room piece of furniture.
If it is desired to utilize the chair as a contour type, then the hinges II are loosened and the cushion 8 is moved upwardly and forwardly to the position shown in Figure 3. The occupant now sits on the padded portion 3 and his back rests against the curved upholstered portion 1 while the feet and legs rest on the top of the cushion 8, thus a comfortable contour type of chair is provided. The cushion 8 can pivot on the links 9, thus assuming a proper angle conforming with the position of the occupant of the chair.
In Figure 4 the back 4 has been dropped its maximum amount and the cushion 8 has been swung forwardly its maximum amount, thus a chair position is provided in which the occupant can recline.
,In Figure 5 the cushion 8 is mounted on the base I by means of pairs of links I2I3 on each side of the chair, the upper end of the links being pivotally secured to the cushion 8 and the lower ends of the links being horizontally secured to the base I by hinges, as shown by Figures 9 and 10. With this arrangement, the angle of the cushion 8 in its forward position is controlled and the cushion 8 is, therefore, not free swinging or pivotally mounted, as shown in Figures 1 to 4, inelusive.
In Figures 6, '7 and 8, the base I of a chair is formed with the usual legs and a back I5 is pivotally secured to the rear of the base I by a hinge I6 which might be of the type shown in Figures 9 and 10. The front of the back I5 is padded or upholstered and this front portion is provided with a recess H, the purpose of which will be further described.
The entire front portion of the back I5 is padded or upholstered in the usual manner.
The seat I8 of the chair includes a rear portion I!) which includes an integral back portion 20. The back portion 20 is arranged at an angle to the seat I9 and conforms with the back I5 as shown in Figure 6. Also, the back portion 20 of the seat is fitted into the recess I'I when the chair is arranged, as shown in Figure 6 which is the usual position of a living room chair. The seat I9 is pivotally secured to the base l4 by a hinge 21 which may be of the type shown in Figures 9 and 10. The seat portion I9 is preferably less than the entire depth of the seat of the chair, that is, it is preferably the rear portion of the seat. The front portion 22 of the seat is fixed to the base I4 and is also upholstered to conform with the level of the seat I9 when that seat is in the position shown in Figure 6.
The upholstered or padded seat portion 23 is provided under the seat portion I9 so that the occupant will have a padded seat to rest upon when the chair is in a contour position shown in Figures 7 or 8. The seat and back portions I9 and 29 can be swung forwardly to the position desired and also the back I5 can be lowered on its hinge 16 any amount, which might be desired by the user.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A contour chair with movable padded seat comprising a base, the top of said base being padded, a back, the front of said back being padded, means pivotally securing said back to the base, a padded seat adapted to rest on the top of said base in one position of the seat, and means hingedly attaching said seat to the base, said seat being movable upwardly and forwardly on said hinge means, a back portion projecting upwardly from said seat, said back portion resting on the chair back in one position of the seat and said back portion covering a part of the seat back.
2. A contour chair with movable padded seat comprising ,a base, the top of said base being padded, a back, the front of said back being padded, means pivotally securing said back to the base, a padded seat adapted to rest on the top of said base in one position of the seat, and means hingedly attaching said seat to the base, said seat being movable upwardly and forwardly on said hinge means, a back portion projecting upwardly from said seat, said back portion resting on the chair back in one position of the seat and said back portion covering a part of the seat back, said seat back having a recess therein to receive said back portion.
3. A contour chair with movable padded seat comprising a base, the top of said base being padded, a chair back rising from the base, means pivotally securing the chair back to the base, the front of said chair back having a recess formed in the front thereof, a seat, said seat being padded, means pivotally securing said seat to the base, a back portion integrally formed with the seat and extending upwardly therefrom at an angle, said back portion fitting into said recess in one position of the seat and said back portion being padded.
