Description

Feb. 11, 1930. A LL 1,746,952
FOLDING CHAIR Filed Oct. 11, 1927 \\\\\\3-\\\\ ll/IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII/IAmaam INVENTOR Patented Feb. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES MAX MARWELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK FOLDING. CHAIR Application filed October 11, 1927. Serial No. 225,418.
This invention relates to a new and useful device in the nature of a folding chair such as generally used to increase the seating capacity of a room, especially in theatres, in-
5 stitutions, churches, auditoriums and the like;
in fact wherever a folding chair may be usefully employed.
The object of the invention is to provide a folding chair of novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a. perspectve view of my improved folding chair as same would appear when in use.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of same in a folded position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a fragmentary front elevational view illustrating in particular a modification of my improved folding chair.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
As here embodied my improved device comprises a seat member 10, upholstered in any desired suitable material, and secured to the seat retaining member 11, as at 12, by screws, bolts, or the like. The seat retaining support so 13, is formed or bent U shaped so as to form a suitable support for the seat retaining member 11, which is secured thereto preferably by spot welding, at the outer edges thereof.
The rod 14 is secured to the rear portion of the seat retaining support 13, and is slidably mounted in the elongated slots 17 formed in the rear legs 15 and 16. The extremities of the rod 11, are riveted over as a means of holde0 ing the rear legs 15 and 16 in position, A
similar rod 18, is secured to the seat retaining member 13 intermediately, and is freely mounted in the extended elements 19 and 20, of the back member 21. The rod 18, has its 43 extremities riveted over, as a means of holding the said extended elements 19 and 20 in position. The rear legs 15 and 16 are pivotally secured at their upper extremities as at 22 and 23, to the upper portions of the extend- 59 ed elements 19 and 20. The rear legs 15 and 16, and the extended elements 19 and 20, are suitably reinforced and further held in position by the cross members 24 and 25, respectively, secured thereto, and extended transversely thereof. The back member 21 is formed or bent U shaped. The back support 26 is formed or bent convex, its lower edge converging somewhat, so as to provide a pocket or recess into which the seat of my improved folding chair somewhat engages, so as to decrease the space required to accommodate my improved folding chair when in a folded position. The upper portion of the back member 21 has form-ed therein elongated slots, adapted to receive the outer edges or, sides of the back support 26. The said back support 26, is secured thereto as at 27 preferably by spot welding. The back support 26 is upholstered, as at 28, by any desired suitable material, preferably to match the upholstery of the seat member 10, and is secured thereto by screws, bolts, or the like. It is obvious that the above described construction is such as will provide a folding chair of simple construction and arrangement of parts.
In Figs. 41 and 5, of the accompanying drawing, 1 have shown a supplementary back member 26, adjustably secured, as at 29 and 30, by bolts, or the like, adapted to engage in elongated slots 81 formed in the supplementary back member 26, and in apertures formed in the back member 26 as a means of extending the supplementary back member 26, downwardly. I have also provided braces 32 and 33, secured by means of the bolts 29 and 30, respectively, to the back member 26, and adapted to extend downwardly therefrom, as a means of reinforcing or supporting the supplementary back member 26, when the said supplementary back member 26 is fully extended downwardly, as designated by the reference numeral 34:.
It is to be understood that the rear legs 15 and 16 extend beyond the vertical projection of the back member 21 when the chair is in operative position. This construction stabilizes the chair and causes the vertical projection of the center of gravity of the person sitting in the chair to be approximately between the front and rear legs of the chair.
WVhile I have above described the preferred form, construction, and arrangement of the several elements employed, it will be understood that the device is nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letjzers Patent of the United States is as folows 1. In a folding chair of the class described, an inverted U-shaped main frame formed with slots on the opposing sides of the arms 7 thereof, a back rest engaged at its ends in the said slots, an adjustable back rest section disposed adjacent the front side of said first mentioned back rest, bolts extending thru apertures in said back rest and thru registering slots in said adjustable back rest section, and braces mounted on the rear of the back rest and extended past an edge thereof, and engaging against the lower portion of said adjustable back rest section.
2. In a folding chair of the class described, an inverted U-shaped main frame formed with slots on the opposing sides of the arms thereof, a back rest engaged at its ends in the said slots, an adjustable back rest section disposed adjacent the front side of said first mentioned back rest, bolts extending thru apertures in said back rest and thru registering slots in said adjustable back rest section, V
and braces engaged on said bolts and extended below said first mentioned back rest and engaging against thelower portion of said adjustable back rest section.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
MAX MARW'ELL.
