' for its principal object the provision of. a
relatively simple, strong and durable chair having a seat portion that is adapted to move upwardly and rearwardly whenever the occupant of the chair arises therefrom, thereby rendering it unnecessary for the user of a chair, positioned adj acentto a desk or table, to push said chair rearwardly when arising from said desk or table. and likewise rendering it unnecessary to shift the position of the I chair when the occupant thereof again seats himself at the desk or table.
Chairs of my improved construction are particularly designed to be used by persons who are engaged upon work at desks or tables and whose work requires them to frequently leave and return to their chairs positioned adjacent to the desks or tables. Chairs of my improved construction are intended for use in oflices, and the use of the chairs will be effective in eliminating much of the time and labor involved'in shifting chairs of or dinary construction toward and away from desks, work tables, or the like, and particularly where the users of the chair are required to frequently leave and return to the chairs.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certainnovel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a chair of my improved construction with dotted lines showing the upper portions of the chair in elevated positions.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the chair.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates the base of the chair which may be of any desired construction, preferably a pair of crossed rails of wood or metal, and pivotally con nected to the rear end of one of the crossed members of said base is a pair of upwardly and forwardly projecting curved arms 11,

the same being spaced a slight distance apart, and the upper ends being pivotally connected to the under side and front portion of a chair seat member 12. Secured in any suitable manner to the rear portion of the seat member 12 is an upwardly projecting seat back 13 of any desired construction, and arranged between said seat back and the sides of the seat member 12 are inverted L- shaped arms 14.
Pivotally secured to the forward portion of the member to which the curved arms 11 are connected are the lower ends of a pair of relatively short links 15, and pivotally connected to the upper ends thereof are the forward ends of horizontally disposed links 16 that occupy positions immediately against the inner faces of curved arms 11. Pivotally connected to the rear ends of links 16 are the lower ends of vertically disposed links 17. and the upper ends of the latter are pivotally connected to the under side of the rear portion of seat member 12. Connected in any suitable manner to the upper ends of links 15 is the forward end of a retractile spring 18, the lower rear endthereof being connected to a pin or book 19 that is seated in the rear portion of the base member to which the arms 1] are connected.
The intermediate portions of links 16 are pivotally connected to curved arms 11 by a horizontally disposed pin 20, and seated in said curved arms and projecting inwardly therefrom at points approximately equidistant from said pin 20, are pairs of pins 21 which serve as stops to engage against the upper and lower edges of the links 16 and limit the downward swinging movement of said links and associated parts when the chair seat is occupied.
When a person is seated in achair of my improved construction, the parts thereof occupy the positions shown by'solid lines in Fig. 1, with spring 18 expanded and with links 16 occupying horizontal positions and bearing against stop pins 21. When the occupant of a chair arises therefrom. spring 18 will contract thereby drawing the upper ends of links 15 rearwardly and swinging links 16 upon their fulcrums or pivot points, and such action swings curved arms 11 up wardly and rearwardly so that the various links and arms and the seat and back structure of the chair occupy the positions as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the seat and back structure of the chair are thus elevated and moved rearwardly away from the desk or table in front of the chair, the person, on arising from said chair, may readily move to either side of said chair and leave the desk or table without the necessity of pushing or moving the chair rearwardly away from the desk or table, and upon returning to the desk or table, the person may conveniently move the seat portion of the chair downward so that it may be occupied without necessitating a forward movement of the base portion of the chair.
A chair of my improved construction is comparatively simple, may be easily and cheaply produced, and is effective in saving much time and labor, particularly in ofiices and work rooms where persons are engaged at work on desks or tables, and Where the work is such that it requires the occupants of the chair to frequently leave and return to their desks or work tables.
It will be understood that minor changes in'size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved chair may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth, in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A chair comprisinga base, arms pivotally connected to the, rear portion of said base, a seat structure to the forward portion of which the upper ends of the arms are pivotally connected, links pivotally connected to said arms, links connecting the rear ends of the first, mentioned links with the rear portion of the seat structure, and links connecting the forward ends of the first mentioned links with the front portion of the base.
2. A chair comprising a base, arms pivotally connected to the rear portion of said base, a seat structure to the forward portion of which the upper ends of the arms are pivotally connected, links pivotally connected to said arms, links connecting the rear ends of the first mentioned links with the rear portion of the seat structure, links connecting the forward ends of the first mentioned links with the front portion of the base, and a retractile spring connected to certain of said links and normally tending to actuate the same and elevate the seat structure. A chair comprising a base, a seat struc ture, arms pivotally connected to the rear portion of the base and to the forward portion of the seat structure, links pivotally connected to the arms at points intermediate their ends, stops on said arms with which said links are adapted to engage, links connecting the rear ends of the first mentioned links with the rear portion of the seat structure, and links connecting the forward ends of said first mentioned links with the forward portion of the base.
