HHHHIIIHIW IHIIIHI" VZ llllhlll HWI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE LANGHORNE, OF MAYSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED BEDSTEAD, LoUNcE, soFA, sbo.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,026, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed July 9, 1889. Serial No. 316,925. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE LANGHORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysville, inthe county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bedstead, Lounge, Sofa, die.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereolnwhich form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding bedsteads, particularly to that class known as sofa or Wardrobe bedsteads.
The obj ect of the invention is to furnish a bedstead which is simple and cheap in construction, and at the saine time strong and durable, which can be readily and quickly folded for transportation froln one place to another, having the form of a chest or trunk, and is adapted to hold the bedclothes or other articles which it may be found desirable to place therein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same when folded. Fig. 3 is a view of the supporthook for the cover. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the detachable arm-cushions, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. l.
A represents the main frame of the device, which may be constructed of any suitable material, and is provided with handles d in the usual manner.
B is the lid or cover, Whichis made in sections and hinged together. The rear section b of the cover is hinged to the back of the mainframe A, and when the cover is lifted this section b is raised to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. l and 5, thus adding the height necessary to render it comfortable to a persons back when the device is used as a sofa. Vhen the section l) has reached a vertical position, the section b', which forms the larger portion of the cover and is hinged to section b, drops down to the slatted seat C7 While the sections h2 b5, which form the remaining portion of the cover and a portion of the front, respectively, are hinged to section b and fold in against the under side of section ZJ between it and the back of the main frame A. This prevents the section b from being pressed in close against the main frame and gives an incline to the back which ren ders it more comfortable, While at the same time the sections b2 b3 are folded in out of the Way and out of sight.
IVhile I have herein shown and described the cover as made in four sections, it is obvious that it can be made in three or more, if desired, though the construction described is preferable.
C is the slatted seat upon which the mattress or cushion is placed, and is hinged, as shown in Figs. l and 5, so that it can be raised to give access to the interior.
D I) l) are hooks which support the dierent sections of the cover, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3. These hooks are formed to rest upon the ends a of the main frame, a portion of the hook d projecting inwardly. Upon this projection d is secured a bar CZ, either permanently or detachably, which forms a secure bearing or support for the cover. When the cover is raised, these supporting-hooks and bar are taken off and placed inside.
E is the detachable arm-cushion, which has formed in its under side a slot in Width equal to the thickness of the end portions a and of suitable depth, which enables it to be slipped on and od the arm-rests.
The operation is as follows: The cover is lifted, the section b being raised to a vertical position upon the back of the main frame A. The section b then drops down to the slatted seat C, and the sections b2 b3 are folded in between the section b and the main frame, forming-an inclined back of convenient height. The support-hooks are detached and placed inside, and the arm-cushions E are placed upon the arm rests d. The mattress or cushion is then placed upon the slatted seat C, and the device is ready for use, the operation of the Whole being exceedingly simple and very quickly done.
Casters are placed at the corners in the usual Way, and it has been found preferable to make them detachable, so that they can be taken off to prevent breaking in transportation.
TOO
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to securel by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bedstead A, provided with the hinged sectional cover B and adapted to be raised to a vertical or inclined position, and supporting-hooks D D, adapted to rest upon the ends a of the bedstead and support the sections of the cover, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the bedstead A and hinged sectional cover B, of the supporting-hooks D D, located at the ends of the bedstead and adapted to clasp over or rest upon the ends a of the same, and transverse bar-d, forming the support for the cover, substantially as described, and for the purpose set MAURICE LANGHORNE.
