BELA KREITH, OF BUDA'PESTH, AUSTRIA-H UNGARY.
BED-SOFA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,901, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed June 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BELA KREITH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Buda-Pesth, in theErnpire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain Im provements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to interconvertible sofas and beds, wherein the back of the sofa forms the front of a beddingreceptacle and is adapted to be turned down to rest on the sofa seat and form a bed and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a supplementary mattress for the bottom of the bedding-receptacle to form a continuation of the hinged mattress or bed forming the sofa-back when turned up and, second, to provide the interconvertible bed sofa with removable arms, all as will be hereinafter fully described and defined in the claims.
1n the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front view, Fig. 2 an end view, and Fig. 3 a cross-section, of the sofa-bed as arranged to form a sofa for use by day. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are, respectively, a front view, end view, and cross-section, of the sofa-bed arranged to serve as a bed for use by night. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the tenoned arms and back removed or lifted off. This view illustrates one method of attaching these parts. Fig. 8 is a perspective view illustrating a modification wherein the arms are hinged to the body so that they may be turned down. Fig. 9 illustrates a modified form of the back and bedding-receptacle.
Referring to the first eight figures of the drawings, Xis the body of the sofa-bed, which may be mounted on legs and upholstered in any of the ways ordinarily employed.
E E are the arms at the ends, which may be secured by tenons as shown or indicated in Fig. 7, or be hinged to the body, as shown in Fig. 8. In this case hooks a a may be employed to hold them in an upright position.
B is a board or box-back fixed to the body X, and provided with a top board and ends, 0 G, as shown. The box thus formed serves as a receptacle for the bedding Y, comprising the pillows, sheets, covers, 8m. A is the mattress for the bed. This is hinged to the body or arms at its lower edge. I have shown it hinged to the arms E by pivot-pins D D, but it may be hinged to the sofa-seat b by sewing its lower edge thereto or by buttoning it to the same. This mattress is upholstered on both sides, the upper side, when it is turned down, forming the mattress-top, and the lower side, which is outward when turned up, forming the upholstered back of the sofa. When turned up, as in the first three figures, the free edge of the mattress may be flush with the top board, 0, of the box-like back and be secured thereto by a hook, c. A is a mattress which, when mattress A is turned down, forms a continuation of the latter, and when A is turned up A forms a sort of bottom for the bedding-receptacle.
Without departing materially from my invention I may remove the back board, B, of the bedding-receptacle and secure the ends and top board, 0 0, to the ends and upper edge, respectively, of mattress A. The sofabed is then pushed up to the wall of the room, which serves in lieu of the back board, B. This modified construction is shown in Fig. 9. The mattress A or its top board, 0, may in this case be secured to the wall by a hook.
The top board and ends, 0, may be made of wood or some flexible material, and the mattress A may be framed with wood, as in Fig. 3, or be made wholly of soft material.
The arms E may be entirely omitted, or be made removable, as in Fig. 7, so that they can be taken OK when the sofa is used as a bed.
I do not herein claim, broadly, an interconvertible bed and sofa wherein the sofa-back forms a front to the bedding-receptacle and is capable of being turned down to form a bed, as this is not new with me.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the body X of a sofa-bed, of the hinged mattress A, arranged as shown, the bedding-receptacle, constructed substantially as shown, and the mattress A, all arranged substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the body X of a sofa-bed, of the removable arms E, the bedding-receptacle constructed and arranged as shown, and the hinged mattress A, arranged, as shown, to form the front of the bedding-receptacle, the back of the sofa, and the bed, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BELA KREITH.
