L ATEN'I PHILIP A. EMERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOFA-BED.
93PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,528, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed July 5, 1883. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sofa and Bed; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined sofa and bed; and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, substantially as herein set forth, described, and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts, Figure l is a per-, spective view of my improvements when used as a sofa. Fig. 2 is aperspective view, showing the parts adjusted as a bed. Fig. 3 is a detail View of a part of the means employed to pivot the bed-frame to the outer frame.
In the drawings, A represents the outer frame that holds or contains the elements of my invention. Said'frame consists of the uprights or side pieces, a a, front piece, a, and top a The frame A thus formed is strengthened by brackets a at the top, and crossbar a at the bottom and back side thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. By the above-described construction it will be readily seen that a strong, light, and durable frame is provided without the necessity of an entire backing. The side pieces, a a, are provided at their low er forward edges with projecting portions a between and to which the sofa-seat B is secured. Said sofa-seat may be upholstered, as shown, or finished in plain or perforated wood, or otherwise, as desired. The projecting portions to of the sides are at their tops provided with arm-rests a, the rear ends of which curve upward and join the forward edges of the sides proper. I
If desired, the space between the' 'sofa-seat B may be used as one compartment, 'or may,
as shown, have drawers I) placed therein, the fronts of which bear against the piece a.
0 represents a rectangular frame, pivoted to the inner surfaces of the side'pieces, a, by a bar, 0, and bearing-plate 0 as shown in Fig.
1, the lower surface of said frame being finished like the seat, or otherwise, and when in D D represent the head and foot boards of 6 5- the bedstead, said boards being pivoted to the sides a, as shown at d, Fig. l. The inner ends of the boards are cut away at their lower edges, as shown by dotted lines at d, Fig. 2, whereby when said boards are thrown up they rest against the rod 0. As will be seen from the -drawings,the outer or upper ends of the boards D D are longer and heavier than the rear ends thereof, and when the bed-frame is turned down said boards fall to their proper position.
E represents aboard hinged at e to the rear side board of the bed-frame C, said board be ing provided at its upper edge and at the rear surface thereof with a pivoted bar E, to the outer end of which is centrally pivoted a swinging cross-bar, E The board E, when the bed is in use, is in the position shown in Fig. 2, and when the bed is closed its position is shown by dotted lines in the same figure. The board E and its connected bars E E bear upon and keep the mattress and bed-clothing in place, the hook (I upon the forward side board of the bed serving to hold said bars E and E in place.
F represents legs attached to the forward side board of the bed-frame, near the ends thereof, as shown. 7
The operation of my invention will be readily understood without further description.
What I claim is p 1. The combination of the frame A, constirueted substantially as shown and described, with the bed-frame G and head-beard 1), the latter being reduced at its inner end, ant adapted to operate as set forth, said train and head-board being independently pivoted to the frame, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the pivoted bedfrmne O, of a hinged side board, 13, hook (2,
I and the folding bars 1 1 111M115, {1S and for the purpoee set forth. 10 1 In testimony whereof I ai'tix mysignaturein 1 presence of witnesses. \Vitnesses: PHILIP Mixin A. Ennny, .t'l-nzien 1). Emmy, J GUN T. DELANY.
