Be it known that I, WILLIAM MOMALL,a citi zen of the United States, residing at Bay Mills,

in the county of Chippewa and State of Miohiarticles more particularly of the folding-bed type, which not only involve a bedstead structure, but also means for converting the same into dilferent articles of furniture.

To this end the invention primarily contemplates a folding-bed structure embodied in a novel construction and combination of parts which adapts the article for use as a dresser or bureau, a settee, and also as a bed proper.

In the accomplishment of these objects the invention has in view the provision of a simple and easily-adjusted structure capable of quickly converting the article from one use to the other.

With these and many other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

While the essential features of the invention are necessarily susceptible to some modification, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combination article of furniture with the parts thereof adjusted to provide a dresser or bureau. ing the parts adjusted to adapt the same for use as a settee. In carrying out the invention the several elements constituting the combination article Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view show-- ber l is'constructed with a pair of compartments, one of which receives therein an ordinarysliding drawer 2 and the otherof which is covered and uncovered at the front side thereof by a door 3, it of course being understood that the drawer 2 and the compartment closed by the door 3 may be utilized to hold any desired articles, such as clothing and the like. The said base member 1 is provided above the plane of the compartments therein with a bottom-supportin g frame 4;, which constitutes a rigid support for the several sections of the folding bed-bottom 5 when the said sections are folded one on top of the other within the vertical plane of the base member 1, as shown in Fig 2 of the drawings. The specific construction of the sectional folding bed-bottom 5 may be best seen from Figs. 3and 4 of the drawings, said bed-bottom essentiallyconsisting of a plurality of duplicate bottom-sections '6, each comprising a frame having side rails 7 and a slatted base 8, upon which is supported a plurality of bed-bottom springs 9, which sustain thereon the mattress-sections 10, it being noted that when the folding bedbottom is extended all of the bottom sections 6 thereof are arranged in horizontal alinemeut, so that the mattress-sections 10 of the several bed-bottom sections will also be alined to constitute a complete mattress for the bed- The adjoining bed-bottom sections bottom. 6 are hinged together at their contiguous edges by the hinge-joints 11, and the hinge-joints of the separate connected sections 6 are arranged, respectively, upon opposite sides of the extended bottom and break in different directions in order to permit the several sections when folded to nest within the base member, one above the other, in the vertical plane of said base member. Although any number of the hinged bottom-sections 6 may be employed, preferably the number shown in the drawings is utilized in the practical construction of the furniture, and, as illustrated, the innermost bed-bottom section 6 is stationary,the same being rigidly fitted within the base member 1, directly upon the support.- ing-frame 4: thereof, and the outermost bedbottom section 6 has projected laterally from the side rails 7 thereof the terminalsupporting-legs 12, which are designed to rest upon the floor and support the entire bed-bottom when the several sections thereof are extended in horizontal alinem'ent, as shown in Fig. 4E of the drawings. At the extreme outer end of the said outermost bed-bottom section 6 there is also arranged a footboard member 13, having a hinged connection at one edge, as at let, to the outer end of the frame of said outermost bed-bottom section 6, said hinged connection 14 permitting the member 13 to swing upwardly at the foot of the bed-bottom when the latter is extended, so as to constitute the ordinary footboard. While any suitable means may be provided for holding the said member 13 in its raised position, in the present construction the sections of thehinges 14 are arranged to have a binding engagement with each other, so that the footboard will be supported through the friction caused by such engagement. When the bed-bottom sections are folded together within the plane of the base member 1, the terminal legs 12 will maintain a vertical position,and the lower ends thereof are adapted to engage with the upper side of the front cross-bar 1 L of the supporting-frame 4, thus bracing the folded bed-bottom sections within the base member 1. With the bed-bottom sections thus folded the said footboard member 13 is adapted to be swung down in front of the nested bedbottom sections, so as to constitute a front cover or closure to conceal the nested or folded bed-bottom sections, while at the same time providing a front panel for the structure.

The base member 1 of the article has extended from the rear side thereof an upright back frame 15, preferably of a rectangular form and essentially comprising the side posts 16 and the upper and lower cross-rails 17 and 18, respectively. The said upright back frame is of an open formation, and within the opening thereof is pivot-ally hung upon the pivots 19 the swinging mirror-holder 20, having mounted therein an ordinary mirrorpanel 21, and associated with the said mirrorholder 20 and the nested bed-bottom sections is a dresser-top 22, consisting of a plain board or slab hinged at one edge, as at 23, to the lower crossrail 18 of the upright back frame 15. The said dresser-top 22 is plain on one side and is provided upon the opposite side with an upholstered face 24, which when the top 22 is lowered is concealed from view and rests on top of the uppermost'of the folded bed-bottom sections, but which when the dresser-top is raised constitutes a back-rest for the settee structure shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When swung to an upright position in front of the mirror, the dresser-top 22 is held in this position by means of a suitable fastening 25, connecting the unhinged edge thereof with the upper rail of the mirror-holder 20, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawlugs.

To provide for making the settee, the hinged bed-bottom sections are so arranged that the mattress-section 10, carried by the outermost bed-bottom section 6, will be exposed at the top of the folded or nested sections to constitute a seat when the dressertop 22 is thrown up and secured in front of the mirror. To complete the settee structure, the base member 1 is provided, upon opposite sides thereof, with folding side frames 26, hinged, as at 27, at their lower edges to the side framework of the base member 1 and provided at their upper sides with curved armrests 28, which have the appearance of and subserve the same function as ordinary armrests to a settee. The folding side frames 2 are normally fastened in an upright position by means of suitable catches or fasteners 29, connecting the frame with the back frame 15. These catches or fasteners 29 may be of any approved form now upon the market, so a specific description thereof is deemed unnecessary; but it will be understood that when said fasteners are released the said frames 26 maybe folded down to pendent positions at the sides of the bottom portion or base member 1, so as to be entirely out of the way when the bed-bottom sections are extended.

In order to render the article thoroughly convenient for use as a dresser, there is preferably associated with the upright back frame of the base member oppositely arranged swinging cabinets 30. These cabinets are of any suitable form and are shown as consisting of rectangular boxes or casings having drawers 31 and door-covered compartments 2, so that the same may be utilized as hatboxes or for holding toilet or other articles, as maybe desired. The said oppositely-arranged'swinging cabinets 30 are preferably hinged at one corner, as at 33, to the upright side posts 16 of the back frame 15, so that the cabinets may be swung to any position convenient for use and also swung entirely out of the way when the structure is arranged for use solely as a bed, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, uses, and many advantages of the herein-described combination article of furniture will be readily apparent to those familiar with the art without further description, and it will also-be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combination article of furniture comprising a base member, a mirror supported upon the base member, a folding bed-bottom adapted to be folded within the vertical plane of the base member and having a mattresssection exposed at the top for a seat, and a combined dresser-top and back-rest adapted to be arranged over the exposed mattress-section, or in front of the mirror.

2. A combination article of furniture comprising a base member, a folding bed-bottom adapted to be folded within the plane of the base member and having a mattress-section exposed at the top for a seat, and a combined dresser-top and back-rest adapted to be arranged over the exposed mattresssection or held in upright position, substantially asset forth.

3. A combination article of furniture comprising a base member having an upright back frame, a mirror-holder mounted within said back frame, a folding bedbottom arranged in its folded condition to form a settee, and a combined dresser-top and back-rest having a hinged support and adapted to be arranged over the folded bed-bottom sections, or held in front of the mirror-holder in an upright position, substantially as set forth.

45. A combination article of furniture comprising a base member, having an upright back frame, a mirror-holder mounted within the back frame,a folding bed-bottom arranged to form a settee when folded, and a combined dresser-top and and back-rest hinged at one edge to the upright back frame, and provided with an upholstered side, said combined dresser-top and back-rest being adapted to be held in an upright position in front of the mirror-holder, or lowered on top of the folded bed bottom sections, substantially as set forth.

5. A combination article of furniture comprising a base member, a folding bed-bottom adapted to be folded within the vertical plane of the base member and having a mattresssection exposed at the top for a seat, folding side frames hinged to opposite sides of the base member and carrying arm-rests, and a combined dressentop and back-rest adapt-ed to be arranged over the exposed mattress-section, or held in an upright position, substantially as set forth. 6. In an article of the class described, the combination with the base member havinga front cross-bar, of a sectional folding bed-bot tom comprising a plurality of duplicate sections hinged together, the innermost bottomsection being rigid with the base member and the outermost bottom-section having terminal supporting-legs adapted when the bed-bottom is folded to engage with and rest on the said front cross bar, and a footboard member hinged to the outermost bottom-section and adapted to be folded up to constitute a footboard when the sections are extended, and to be folded downward to conceal the sections when folded within the plane of the base member.
