A TTOHNE Y8 NITED TATES FRANK A. THOMAS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW? YORK.
CONVERTIBLE CHAIR, CRADLE, AND LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,974, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed November 14, 1889! Serial No. 330,309. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. THOMAS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Chair, Cradle, and Lounge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to devise a practical article of furniture which may be used as a chair, cradle, or lounge at pleasure.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similarlet-ters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention as it appears when closed to constitute a chair. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same on line to m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with the back cloth turned down to show the pillow and covering for the cradle. Fig. 4. is an inverted sectional view on line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a broken front elevation of my invention when arranged to constitute a cradle. Fig. 6 is an inverted sectional view on line a z of Fig. 5.
The article of furniture of my invention comprises a main body A and a sliding section B. The body A is formed with a back A, bottom A legs A A, rockers A A, and one arm A The back is composed of the uprights aa, top piece a, and the spaced slats a. a The bottom is composed of the spaced slats a a side bars a a, and crossbrace a. The sliding section B is composed of the upright B, legs B rocker B crosspiece B spaced slats b at the bottom, which slide between the slats a at the bottom of the main part A, and the spaced slats b at the back, which slide between the slats a at the back of the main body of the chair. The sliding section has also the arm B and top piece B, which latter slides in a channel in the top rail a under the top piece a. of the main body. The section B may be slid into the main frame and locked by a catch d d (see Figs. A and 6) or other means, and when 'so situated a very compact and comfortable rocking-chair is formed. By grasping the outer rail B of the sliding section in the fingerpockets 2' (see Fig. 6) the said section may be easily drawn out, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to form a crib or cradle. When so drawn out, the front piece D (shown in Figs. 5 and 6) is to be secured to the crib by screws f f or other means, to prevent a child placed in the cradle from falling out. This front piece is composed of end pieces h h, center piece it, and alternate spaced slats h 713, which slide so that the said side piece may be closed to occupy small space.
j is a stop to prevent the sliding section from being drawn out too far.
At the back of the chair is secured the back cloth E, buttoned to the knobs e to re tain a pillow P and covering P for the crib, and the front piece D may be inclosed by this back cloth, if desired.
The top rail to is provided with two set screws m m, which may be turned down to impinge upon the rail B of the sliding section for locking said section and preventing it from accidental extension. When the said sliding section is drawn out and the front piece D removed, the device constitutes a sofa or lounge.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenti '1. In a combined chair and cradle, the combination of a body-section having a slotted side and back and one arm, said back being formed with a top rail, of a sliding section having an arm and a slatted back and bottom, the slats of which intermesh with the slats of the body-section, the top rail of the back of said body-section forming a guide for the top rail of the sliding section, and setscrews binding said top rails, substantially as described. 7
2. Ina combined chair and cradle, the combination, with abody-section and a sliding section, of a stop j, consisting of a hook having an elongated shank and serving to limit the outward movement of the sliding section, substantially as described.
3. The convertible chair, cradle, and lounge herein shown and described, the same consisting of the main body A and a sliding section, each composed of intermeshing sliding slats at the back and bottom, in combination with a removable back-section to form the front of the cradle, means for preventing accidental extension, and hooks to prevent detachment of the sliding section from the main section, substantially as described.
