Be it known that I, Mourns APPEL, a subject of the King of Roumania, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NardrobaBeds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to an article of furniture in which a bed element when not'in use is adapted to be entirely inclosed within a casing forming a wardrobe element.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and useful article of furniture having a casing adapted to form a wardrobe element for hanging clothes or other articles so as to be entirely inclosed within the same, and an element serving as a bed which is adapted to be made to fold within a compact space and within the wardrobe element when not in use so as to have the appearance of an ordinary closet or wardrobe, thus making the device serve the purpose of more than one article and at the same time materially economizing in space and also in the cost of manufacture of separate and independent articles.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a table may be supported convenient to the bed element when in use; to provide means which will properly brace the parts of the bed when in use; to provide simple and efficient means for guiding a part of the bed while being folded within the wardrobe element; and to provide simple and efficient means for holding the mattress properly in position to serve as a head rest.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the bed and the table in position for use. The closet or wardrobe element 10 may be of any desired form and of any suitable construction, and at or near each side thereof is providedwith a guide 11 suitably spaced from the sides 12 of the wardrobe element, and said guides 11 are each provided with a groove 13 which curves upwardly at the inner part thereofin which is adapted .to move a mattress support or plate 14. This plate or device 14 is of sheet metal, and is substantially the same width as the bed element 14 and has one end secured by springs 15 or otherwise to the foot-piece 16 of the bed element, and at its other end, as at 17, is made to fit the grooves 13 at each edge so as to be properly guided therein when the bed is folded within the wardrobe element and not in use. in which the side-bars 28 of the bed frame each of which is adapted to fit a spring 33.

The springs 33 are adapted 'toengage a tooth 34 of the guides in such a way as to hold the foot-piece 16 the proper distance from the wardrobe element and to prevent the same from being forced inward by accident, though the springs are so made that the bed with the side-bars 28 may be forced inward along the guides when the bed is to be folded and not in use, the legs of the foot-piece 16 being provided with rollers or casters to permit it to be readily moved.

The mattress 23 -may be of any suitable form, and may be held to the plate 14 in any desired way. As shown the mattress comprises a main member 35 which is of less width than the plate 14, and is substantially equal to the distance between the guides 11 forming the edge supports for the plate or mattress support 14, and attached to the main member 35 may be two smaller members 36 and 37 which may be folded over and upon the main member 35 when the bed element is to be forced within the wardrobe element, and the members 36 and 37 are for the purpose of entirely covering the plate 14 when in use. A bar 88 may be arranged at the foot of the mattress for securing the same to the plate 14, and to the mattresssupporting plate 14 a second bar 39 may be arranged near the head thereof, through which bolts or other means may be passed for fastening purposes, though instead of the plate 14 other means may be used for supporting the mattress if desired.

To adapt the mattress to be raised at the head, I provide a plate 40 which may be attached to the plate 14 at one edge thereof, and said plate 40 is adapted to be raised to the position shown in Fig. 3. A handle 4]. may be provided for raising the head of the mattress, and one or more pivoted arms or bars 42 may be pivoted at one end of the plate 40, and its other end adapted to engage the plate 14 so as to hold the same in its proper position. In case it is desired to lower the plate 40 and the head of the mattress, the bar or rod 42 is released from engagement with the plate 14, in which case the plate 40 may be made to rest on the plate 14.

As a means for holding clothes or for other purposes, the wardrobe element may be variously constructed. As shown it is provided with a plurality of hooks 43 or other. devices on which clothes may be hung, and said wardrobe element is cut away at the lower part thereof to adapt it to receive the footpiece 16 of the bed without being particularly noticeable, and above the foot-piece of the bed may be arranged one or more doors 44 permitting access to the wardrobe element, and at the lower portion thereof may be rovided with a drawer 45 for holding various articles. The drawer is so arranged that it can be opened or closed without inter fering with the foot-piece of the bed, and may be provided with suitable handles and arranged in any desired way as a part of the wardrobe.

The wardrobe element may be cut away, as at 46, on either or both sides thereof, and adapted to fit the opening is table 47 when the latter is not in use. The table 47 is adapted to slide along the rod 48 toward the front of the wardrobe element, and while in use may be supported at the outer edge thereof by a brace rod 49. The rod 49 may be so held in the opening 46 as to permit the same to fold inwardly, and to permit the outer end to engage the table as shown in Fig. 2. When not in use, the table may be forced inward along the rod 48 until it is free of the slot 50, Fig. 1, when the table may be swung downward to close the opening 46.

The term wardrobe is intended to include any casing or inclosure which is adapted to hold articles, and it will be understood that the said wardrobe element may be of any desired shape and size according to the nature of the bed element used in connection therewith.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and efficient household article is provided which combines all the advantages of a wardrobe, bureau, table and bed that the parts may be collapsed or folded together in such a way as to present the appearance of a single article when not in use or used simply as a wardrobe; that simple and efficient means are provided for bracing, guiding and holding the several parts together; that said article is simple in construction, strong and attractive in appear ance, and by combining the features herein shown a minimum amountof space will be occupied.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein. provided with antifriction rolls and guide slots above the antifriction rolls, mattress supporting means slidingly held in the slot of the guides, a bed element having a foot piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end of the mattress supporting means; and side bars forming a part of the bed element and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for folding purposes. r

2. The combination with a wardrobe ele ment, of a bed element, a mattress supporting device, a mattress thereon, a foot piece forming a part of the bed element to which the mattress supporting device is secured, side bars forming a part of the bed element and comprising a plurality" of telescopic members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other, and guides in said Wardrobe for said mattress supporting device and side bars respectively, whereby the mattress and side bars are adapted to be moved simultaneously into the wardrobe, the mattress at all times retaining its normal outspread condition.

3. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein provided with anti-friction rolls and guide slots above the anti-friction rolls, a mattress plate slidingly held in the slot of the guides, a bed element having a foot-piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end oi'the mattress plate, a mattress held to the plate, a head-plate arranged on the mattress plate, a rod pivotally held to the head-plate and adapted to engage the mattress plate to hold the mattress elevated at the head portion thereof, guides arranged in the wardrobe element and provided with a tooth, side-bars forming a part of the bed element and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for folding purposes, and springs carried by one of the members of the sidebars and adapted to engage the tooth of the guides.

5. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein provided with anti-friction rolls, a mattress-supporting device adapted to move along the guides, a bed element having a foot-piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end to the mattress-supporting device, a mattress held to the device, a head-plate arranged on the mattress device, means for holding the head-plate and adapted to hold the mattress elevated at the head portion thereof, guides arranged in the wardrobe element and provided with teeth, side-bars forming a part of and bracing the bed element and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for'folding purposes, and means carried by one of the side-bars and adapted to engage the teeth of the guides for the purpose set forth.

6. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein provided with anti-friction rolls, a mattress plate slidingly held to move along theguides and rolls, a bed element having a foot-piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end of the mattress plate, a mattress held to the plate, a head-plate arranged on the mattress plate, means held to the head-plate and ada ted to hold the mattress elevated at the head portion thereof, the side-bars forming a part of the bed element and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for folding purposes and guided within the wardrobe element, and means carried by the side-bars adapted to engage a part of the wardrobe element to hold the footpiece against accidental movement.

7. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein provided with guide slots, a mattress plate slidingly held in the slots of the guides, a bed element having a foot-piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end of the mattress plate, a mattress held to the plate, a head-plate arranged on the mattress plate, means pivotally heldto the head-plateand adapted to engage the mattress plate to hold the mattress elevated at the head portion thereof, guides arranged in the wardrobe element and provided with teeth, side-bars forming a part of the bed element and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for folding purposes, and means carried by one of the members of the side-bars and adapted to engage the teeth of the guides.

8. The combination with a wardrobe element having guides therein provided with guide slots therein, a mattress plate slidingly held in the slots of the guides, a bed element having a foot-piece forming a part of the bed element and secured at one end of the mattress plate, a head-plate arranged on the mattress plate, a rod pivotally held to the head-plate and adapted to engage the mattress plate to hold the mattress elevated at the head portion thereof, side-bars forming a part of the bed element (12) and comprising a plurality of members adapted to move relatively with respect to each other for folding purposes, and springs carried by one of the members of the side-bars and adapted to engage a part of the wardrobe element to hold the foot-piece against accidental movement. 7
