RUBEN B. AYRES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No, 371,871, dated October 18, 1887.
Application tiled February 1, 1887. Serial No. 226,128. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUBEN B. AYREs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object a simple, easy, and convenient means of folding and unfolding a bed to and from any combined article of furniture, or a closet or recess in the wall of a room, or otherwise, as may be found practicable.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation representing'niy improved folding bed in a horizontal position ready for use and combined with a casing or recess formed at the back ofa wardrobe or other upright article of furniture. Fig. 2 shows the bed folded into an upright position within the casing or recess at the hack of the furniture, (seen in Fig. 1;) and Fig. 3a detached view, to an enlarged scale, of the upper left-hand corner of the bedframe and recess, as seen in Fig. 2, like letters of reference denoting like parts in all the figures.
a represents the bed-fra1ne, ateach side of which, near the head, is pivoted externally a roller, Z), (seen more particularly in Fi 3,) the two rollers b, when the bed a is horizontal, as in Fig. 1, being located at the entrance of and supported in grooves 0, formed in the sides of a casing or recess, (1, which in this case projects from the back ofa wardrobe or other upright piece of furniture, 0, as shown. The
grooves 0 curve sharply backward and upward for a certain distance and thence incline gradually backward and upward to the top of the casing or recess (1.
At the bottoms of the foot-legs fto the bed-frame a are pivoted large rollers g, which rest on the floor, and to the spindles h of these rollers g are fixed spring barrels z',which are connected by cords j with staples (or hooks) k, fixed in theback of the casing or recess (Z.
\Vhen desired to fold the bed, the bedframe a is pushed backward. The foot and the head rollers 1), running in and mounting the grooves 0, guide and elevate the head of the bed-frarne 0.,and with it the entire bed, into an upright position within the casing or recess (Z, as seen in'Fig. 2 and by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The springs iare so arranged that when the bedframe a is lowered for unfolding from the casing or recess (1 into the horizontal position they are Wound or brought into a state of tension by the rotation of the rollers g and their spindles h,combined with the pull on the cords j, by which means, when the bed-frame a is being pushed or folded into the casing or recess d, the reaction of the springs teases 'or acts as a counter-balance to the weight of the bed-frame a.
I claim as my invention In a folding bed, the combination of easing c, bed-frame a, foot-rollers g, spindle h, and springs 2', connected with the spindle h and easing c and arranged to he brought into a state of tension by the rotation of the rollers g, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of December, 1886.
RUBEN B. AYRES.
