To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LUPPINO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to davenports, the object of the invention being to provide an improved convertible davenport extremely simple in construction and very easily operated, and which may be readily opened by pedal operated means, and therefore without the necessity of manipulating the back of the seat thereof to transform the same into a double bed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved davenport comprising a stationary section which constitutes supporting means for the back when the same is lowered and which stationary section is of skeleton formation and is located below the seat or seat section when the structure is in the form of a davenport, and in which the seat section will slide over. the stationary section when the structureis transformed into either a double bed or a davenport, and both of which stationary and seat sections are each provided with supporting legs.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved davenport with a part of the stuffed mattress in section to more clearly illustrate the improvement; Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrat-. ing a portion of the back; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the structure when in the form of a davenport; Fig. 4 is an end View of the same; Fig. 5 is an end view ofthe' structure when converted into a double bed; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the stationary section of the structure.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings.
The present improvement comprises a stationary section 2, shown in Fig. 6, consisting of a pair of end frames 3 and 4, each comprising a transverse or cross member 5 having supporting means or legs 6, the end frames being connected by suit-able Specification of Letters Patent. longitudinally extending members or side bars 7 braced by suitable braces 8 wherever necessary. This section rests upon the floor and is adapted to receive the back of the davenport when the same is lowered.
The seat section is somewhat similarly formed, in that it consists likewise of a pair of end frames 9 and 10, each consisting of transverse or cross members 12 having legs 13, and which end frames are suitably connected by lengthwise extending members or side bars 15 and-suitable tension strips 16, and also have suitable braces 17. Hinged to this seat section is a back section 18, comprising a'frame consisting of a pair of end members or bars 19 connected at their outer ends by a longitudinally extending bar 20 and adjacent to their inner ends by adrop form of side bar 21. The metallic fabric or spring mattress 22, which may be of any suitable construction, is stretched between the cross members 12 of the seat section, being shown connected thereto bysuitable helical springs 23, and also between the cross bars 19 of the back frame, being likewise connected thereto by suitable helical springs 24, and in the present instance this fabric is shown as one continuous fabric, unbroken at the juncture point between the back and seat. In the present improvement the forward edge of the fabric of the seat section is provided with some suitable form of side guard 25 for preventing the spreading or shifting of the upholstered cushion 26 constituting the seat and the back, this cushion being secured to the back at the upper edge thereof by carrying a portion o'fthe covering of the cushion over the back and uniting it by some suitable hooks or other devices to the cushion on the rear side thereof, as at 27.
In order to give the seat greater resiliency than'is obtained by the use of a spring fabric mattress, the side bars, of the seat section are connected at intervals by transversely extending braces 28 supporting spiral springs 29 located under the spring fabric of the seat section. The back frame is connected to ithe rear of the stationary section at each end thereof by a pair of links 30, the upper end of each of which is pivoted-to a member 19 of the back, while the lower end is slotted, as at 31, for the retie lla5
ception of a headed pin 82 carried by the rear leg of the stationary section, and for facilitating the lowering and raising of the back a suitable coiled spring 33 is provided at each end, one end of each of which is connected to a link while the other end is connected to a leg of the stationary section.
For shifting the seat section to convert the structure into a double bed as shown in Fig. 5, and to facilitate the change thereof into a davenport as shown in several of the other figures, pedal operated means is provided, and this in the present instance consists of a rock shaft 34 extending from end to end of the stationary section and supported by the forward legs thereof, the ends of the shaft being bent rearwardly and forming crank arms 35, to which is pivotally connected, at each end of the structure, a curved ended lever 37, which is also pivotally connected to the rear leg of the seat section, projecting beyond the same for operation by the foot. Carried adjacent to the end of each crank arm is a pin 38 adapted to engage the pedal operated lever when the structure is in the form of a davenport, and therefore constitutes a stop for limiting the movement of the seat section rearwardly. 7
From the foregoing it will be observed that on actuating either of the pedal levers the seat section will be shifted forwardly on its own legs from off the top of the stationary section, and simultaneously, by means of the links connecting the back with the stationary section, the back will be lowered onto the stationary section as shown in Fig. 5, in which position the pedal levers and the crank arms will be in the position shown in said Fig. 5. When it is desired to transform the structure into a davenport the back is grasped and raised, thereby sliding the seat section from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 4 and in several of the other figures, this action beingfacilitated by the springs.
From the foregoing it will be observed that both the stationary and seat sections are supported by their own legs, and that the seat section is located above the stationary section and therefore is shifted from ofi the top thereof to form a double bed or on to the top thereof to form a davenport, and
that by reason of the present construction it is entirely practicable to use helical springs to give additional resiliency to the seat section, and that the shifting of the seat section forward from off the top of the stationary section is readily accomplished by a very simple mechanism, comprising simply a rock shaft and a lever, one at each end thereof, so that this operation can be effected from either end of the structure. The stationary section is not intended to have any movement whatsoever, so that the stationary section thus forms a means for supporting the back when the same is lowered and which can therefore be of skeleton formation, since it acts simply as a supporting means for the back when in its lowered position.
It will also be observed from the foregoing that in the present improvement the seat is shifted forward to the front side of the stationary section, which movement permits the hinged backto drop onto the stationary section, so that in the present organization, in order to transform the structure into a double bed or into a davenport, it is unnecessary to shift any part of the structure other than the seat and its back, so that in converting the structure into a double bed it is unnecessary to shift means into position to receive the back, since when the seat is shifted forward it is supported by its own legs and carries the back into position to be lowered onto the stationary section.
By reason of the fact that each of the links 30 is slotted at its end, as at 31, these links can be readily withdrawn from the headed-pins 32, so that the back may be turned down upon the seat and the structure K thus readily shipped in a compact condition, with the seat section over the stationary section and the back resting horizontally upon the seat in a manner which will be readily understood. i
It will, of course, be understood that one end of the spring will be unhooked from the link or from the stationary section as found most desirable at this time. i
The various details of construction may be more or less modified Without departing from the spirit and scope of the present improvement, as for instance, the curved end of the lever 37 may be extended above the link and such extended end form a stop in place of the stop 38 carried by the link 35. I claim as my invention:
1. A convertible davenport consisting of a stationary section having legs and a shiftable seat section also having legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section and maintained upright when the struc ture is in the form of a davenport, the seat section being located above the stationary section so that it is shiftable over the same to carry the seat thereof to the front of said stationary section and the back down onto the stationary section.
2. A convertible davenport consisting of a stationary section having legs and a shiftable seat section also having legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section and maintained upright when the structure is in the form of a davenport, the seat section being located above the stationary section so that it is shiftable overthe same to carry the seat thereof to the front of said stationary section and the back down onto the stationary section, and means for shifting said seat section to convert the structure into a double bed.
3. A convertible davenport consisting of a stationary section having supporting means and a shiftable seat section having legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section and maintained upright when the structure is in the form of a davenport, the

8. A convertible davenport consisting of a stationary section having supporting means and a shiftable seat section also hav ing legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section, the seat section being located above the stationary section so that it is shiftable over the same to carry the seat thereof to the front of said stationary section and the back down onto the stationary section, and means for shifting said seat section and comprising a rock shaft carried by one section and a pedal lever carried by the other section and pivotally connected to the rock shaft, and a stop for limiting movement of such parts.
9. A convertible davenport consistin of a stationary section having legs and a shiftable seat section also having legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section, the seat section being located above the stationary section so that it is shiftable over the same to carry the seat thereof to the front of said stationary section and the back down onto the stationary sect-ion, means for shifting said seat section and comprising a .rock shaft carried by the forward legs of the stationary section and a pedal lever carried by a rearward leg of the seat section and pivotally bonnected to the rock shaft,

10. A convertible davenport consist-ing of a stationary section having legs and a shiftable seat section also having legs and a hinged back linked to the stationary section, the seat section being located above the stationary section so that it is shiftable over the same to carry the seat thereof to the front of said stationary section and the back down onto the stationary section, and means carried by the stationary and seat sections and operative to convert the structure into a double bed and comprising a shaft and a pedal. lever connected therewith, the shaft being; carried by the legs of the stationary.
