To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:

Beit known that we, GEORGE F. FLECKEN- STEIN and CHARLES S. Dow, citizens of the United States, residing at SiouX City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beds; and we do declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part thereof.

Our invention relates to improvements in beds, and particularly the kind of bedsteads made of iron or ybrass rods, although it is applicable to beds of all kinds.

The object of the invention is the provision of shelves or tables pivotally secured to the head or foot of the hed in such manner that they may be adjusted to the position of a person reclining in the bed for the use of writing materials or in serving a meal. The shelves are also provided with. hooks onwhich clothing may be hung when the tables are not in use, and large hooks are pivotally secured to the foot of the bed in such manner that they may be turned outwardly for the reception of Wearing-apparel upon retiring.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a rear end View of bedstead with our adjustable shelves and hooks attached. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a front View of foot of bedstead, showing large hooks as they appear when not in use. Fig. 4C is a plan View of head of bed and section of side pieces with the shelves closed, the dotted lines at the right showing the position of one of the shelves when ready for use. Fig. 5 is a plan view of foot of bed and section of side pieces with the large hooks closed, the dotted lines showing the position of the hooks when opened ready for use.

Referring now to the illustrations, in which like parts are designated by similar letters of reference, A is the head of the bedstead, B the foot, and C C the side pieces.

A A are the posts for the head-piece, and

B B the posts for the foot-piece.

E E are rectangular frames, made of brass or iron rods or other suitable material, pivoted to the respective posts A A at the points e e. They normally rest against the pieces composing the head of the bed. To the lower sides of these frames are pivotally secured the adjustable shelves F F, normally held in an upright position, as seen in Fig. 1, by means of the snaps or springs ff on the upper sides of the frames. To the rear sides of the shelves are secured the hooks g g, on which articles of clothing may be hung when the use of the shelves is not desired, and on retiring the frames E E may be swung out, as shown by the dotted lines, and the clothing hung upon the hooks. When it is desired to use the shelves, the frames are first swung out and the shelves released from the snaps and dropped to a horizontal position, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, where they are each held by a chain it, one end of which is secured to the shelf, the other to the top of the pivoted frame. A cord maybe substituted for the chain or any suitable means employed for sustaining the shelf. To the posts of the foot-piece are pivotally secured at the points t' 2l the large triangular-shaped hooks H H, which normally rest against the footpiece. When in use, the hooks are swung outwardly and make convenient means for supporting the wearing-apparel, towels, and other' articles.

The application of our improvements may be varied in many forms to suit the various styles and forms of beds and also to please individual taste Without departing from the spirit and principle of our invention.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a bed frame, `of frames pivotally secured to the posts of the bed and adapted to swing outwardly from the bed, shelves pivotally secured to the lower edges of said frames, hooks secured to said shelves, springs for securing said shelves in an upright position and chains secured to the pivoted frames of the bed and the shelves and adapted to hold the latter in a horizontal position, substantially as described.
