NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD LOVELL, OF ST.y LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN soFA-BEDSTEADS. y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,249., dated August 26, 1873; application filed February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LovELL, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain Improvement in Bedstead-Lounges, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to that class of lounges which are divided horizontally and theparts hinged together at one side, so as to admit of opening out to form a double bedstead, and specifically to a lounge made with a hinged back and with two frame-sections hinged together at back. My improvements consist, iirst, in so constructing and combining the parts that the back, when prostrate, may rest directly upon the floor without bearing upon its hinges, and the upper frame section may rest, by its arm or projecting'head, upon the prostrate back, as hereinafter described; second, in combining with two frame sections, hinged together at back, a sliding leg adapted to support the foot end of the seat when opened, as herein explained.
In the, drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame-work in its open positionas a bed-the upholstering being removed to Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement in lounge form.
` A is the lower section of the lounge, standing on legs a., in which may be set casters. B are cross-bars supporting the bed in the lower section. O are hinges connecting the lower section with upper one D, so that the upper section may be folded over backward, as shown in Fig. 1, and the two together form a double i bed. The edges of both sections are cut away at c, and the edges ofthe mattresses are carried over, at c, to make the upper surface perfeet from side to side. c' is a cross-tie. E is the back, which is hinged to the section A, near the floor, as at d, so that said back can be folded down upon the iloor and form a base on which the upper section D can rest, by its projecting head or arm D', when opened out, as shown in Fig. 1. F is a leg, supporting the outer corner ofthe foot of the section D. This leg is attached to a bar, f, sliding in the end of the section A, between cleats c. G is a hook pivoted to the section D, and taking over a lug, g, which is attached to the back. This lug has a lip taking over the edge of the back to receive the strain, which the attachingscrews might be inadequate to resist. The purpose of the h ook and lug is to hold the back in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The upper section may, if desired, be made in twoparts, divided transversely; and the longitudinal parting between the sections A and D may be made at a different angle upon either side of the transverse division, or at a different height.
In hin ged-back lounges heretofore'made the back has been hinged at such a height that, when prostrate, it would rest on the iioor by its upper edge, and the inverted seat, resting on the back, would throw considerable strain on the hinges of the latter.
In my invention I obviate these objections by adapting the back to lie fiat on the floor, and the hinged member of the frame to rest by its arm upon the back, instead of by'its seat. I am thus enabled to use a simple rigid arm connected to the upper member of the frame, and dispense with the use of a hinged arm.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rigidly-connected seat Dl and arm D', forming the upper member of the lounge, hinged at back to the armless lower member A, in combination with the back E hinged to the bottom of the frame A, so as to adapt it to lie ilat on the licor and support the rigid arm D', without direct contact of the seat D, all as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the lounge sections A D and back E, constructed substantially as set forth, the sliding leg F, as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD LOVELL.
