JAMES M. HAMILTON, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED CHAIR AND COUCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed July 1, 1907. Serial No. 381,632.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JAMES M. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in .vented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Chair and Couch; and I do hereby declare the follow ing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a perspective view of a combined chair and couch constructed in accordance with my invention and shown for use as a chair. Fig. 2 a side view shown for use as a couch. Fig. 3 a top or plan view of the device in position for use as a couch and shown with the cushions removed.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined chair and couch, that is, a structure which may be used either as a chair or a couch, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby an easy chair may be readily converted into a couch; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
As shown in the drawings, the device when used as a chair forms one of the style similar to the so called Morris type except that the back is not adjustable, and consists of side frames 2 supported by legs 3, and back 4 pivoted to the rear of the frame 2 and so as to extend into the frame, 01' in other words, pivoted at a point so that when the back is in its raised position, the lower end will extend downward below the point where the back is pivoted to the frame. The seat frame 5 is pivoted to the side frames 2, the seat frame comprising sides 6 which support the arms 7, and rear arm supports 8 which are inclined corresponding to the desired pitch of the back when the back is raised the supports extending to a point considerably below the side frames 2. These extensions below the sides 6 of the seat frame form locking braces 9 and also provide an inclined surface on the underside of the seat frame. A cushion 10 will be secured to the back, the cushion extending throughout its entire length and an independently formed seat cushion 11 will be fitted to the seat.
As shown in Fig. l of the drawing when the device is used as a chair the arm supports 8 bear against the back and the lower end of the arm supports 8 or the braces 9 bearing against the back below the point of adjustment to the seat frame positively interlock the seat with the back so that the back cannot be moved without raising the scat.
When desired for use as a couch the seat cushion 10 will be removed and the seat frame turned forward and downward as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When the seat has been turned forward it will be supported by the arms 7, and when so turned forward the back is free to be turned downward and be supported in a horizontal position by a support 12 hinged to the top of the back which support folds inward when the back is raised. After the back has been turned down the seat cushion 11 is replaced on the then upper part of the scat frame which stands in an inclined position so as to form a head rest.
I claim:-
A combined chair and couch comprising side frames, legs, a back pivoted between said side frames and extending inward beyond the pivotal point, a seat frame pivoted to said side frames and adapted tobc turned therein, said seat frame comprising arms and a back support therefor, and inclined braces adapted to bear against the back below its pivotal point when the back is in the raised position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES M. HAMILTON.
