FRANK E. .JOSELIN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
COMBINED BED AND DAVENPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK EDWARD J osE- LIN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bed and Davenport; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a device which can be used either as a bed, davenport, or couch, and it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of the parts whereby the back can be raised to, and, maintained in, an upright or perpendicular position when the device is to be used for one purpose, or lowered and maintained in a substantially horizontal position when the device is to be used for another purpose.
In carrying out this feature of the invention I pivotally connect the back of the device to the seat in such a manner that the back will be carried across the seat with its upholstered surface turned upward,
so that when the back is in its upright position, the upholstered surface will be to the front and when in its lowered position, to the top of the device, the movement and position of the back being controlled by levers and links, arranged as hereinafter described, assisted by springs to retard the movement of the back as it changes from an upright to a horizontal position, and accelerate its movement from its horizontal to its upright position.
For an understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l, is a perspective view of the device embodying the principles of the invention with the back part in its upright position. Fig. 2, is a similar view to Fig. 1, with the back part in its lowered or horizontal position. Fig. 8, is a sectional View with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, showing in dotted lines the position assumed by the back part when moving from the upright position shown in Fig. 1, to the lowered position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4:, is a sectional view with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The device is particularly designed as a Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 14;, 1910. Application filed August 7, 1909.
Serial No. 511,802.
combined bed and davenport, but it may be used in connection with couches, sofas, and the like. The term davenport will therefore be understood to mean any device consisting of a stationary seat part and a movable back part capable of being angularly disposed to the seat part or being moved into the same plane as the latter.
The seat part (4, preferably upholstered, is stationarily supported by the main frame I) and the back part (Z is pivotally connected by two levers e to the main frame. These levers e are pivoted, at one end to the back part (Z and near their other end are pivoted to the main frame. The end of the levers pivoted to the main frame are of an L or crank shape, and connected to their crank arms 6' are springs f which are also connected to studs f attached to the main frame. The levers e are connected to the top of the back part, when the latter is in its upright position, and during the movement of the back part from the position shown in Fig. l, to that shown in Fig. 2, the springs draw against the crank arms 6 and retard the movement of the levers e and thus cause the back part to move gradually and easily from its upright to its horizontal position. During the movement of the back part from the position shown in Fig. 2, to that shown in Fig. l, the springs draw against the levers and balance the weight of the back part, and thus assist in lifting the latter as it moves from its horizontal to its upright position. Pivoted to the back part and to the main frame are links 9 and it, the links it being jointed. The links 9 are are pivoted to the back part between its ends, and the links it are pivoted to the back part near its lower end, when in its up-.
right position or its front when in its lowered position.
During the movement of the back part between its upright and horizontal positions, the links 9 and h operate to raise the upholstered surface cl of the back part uppermost and maintain it in that position so that if the parts are properly proportioned, the upholstered surface a of the seat part will be in the same plane as the upholstered surface d of the back part when the latter is lowered into its horizontal position.
The links it near their pivotal connection with the back part are provided with legs 2' which bear on the floor surface and support the front of the back part when in its lowered position, the opposite end of the links h bearing on the cross bars a of the seat part and being supported by it with the links 9 resting on the links h, and the levers e resting on the links g, supporting respectively the middle and rear of the back part in its lowered position. When the back part is in an upright position, the links it assume the position shown in Fig. 3, with the legs i resting against the front of the back part.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The hereinbefore described device comprising a stationary seat part, a movable back part, levers pivoted to the seat and back parts, springs connected to the seat part and to the levers to balance the back part during its movements, links connected to the seat part and to the back part between its ends, and other links connected to the front of the seat part and to the lower end of the back part when in its upright position.
2. The hereinbefore described device comprising a stationary seat part, a movable back part, levers pivoted to the seat and back parts, springs connected to the seat part and to the levers to balance the back part during its movements, links connected to the seat part and to the back part between its ends, other links connected to the front of the seat part and to the lower end of the back part when in its upright position, and legs connected to the last mentioned links supporting the front of the back part in its lowered position.
Toronto, July 13th, 1909.
