ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS E. SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and. State of Indiana, have invented a certain.

The object of this invention is to provide a davenport or like article of furniture with a seat portion which is sufficiently high when the parts are in the settee position and will move downwardly out of the way of the folding or bed portion so it will be sufficiently low when down in the bed position.

The chief feature of the invention consists in making a receding seat portion and connecting it with the folding bed portion in such manner that said seat portion will be moved to its various positions by the bed portion when it is moved to the bed or settee position, and so that the bed portion will be low enough for convenient use.

The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

The frame or stationary part of the device has a front bar 10 which'extends up high enough to receive and support the folding bed portion 11 when turned down to the bed position, as shown in Fig. 3. The frame also has a rear longitudinal bar 12 and ends consisting of a lower portion 13-, an upper open work portion 11 and a rear vertically disposed board or plate 15. These parts 13, 14k and 15 are rigidly secured together or, if desired, are integral and are supported by casters 16 on the floor.

The folding bed portion 11 is a rectangular box whichis open at the top whenin the folded down condition, and open to the rear when in the upright condition. The portion 11 is fulcrurned at its two sides to the end plates 15 by the fulcrums 17 so that when in the uprightposition the lower part of the folding bed portion will be substantially flush with the lower part of the end plates 15.

The mode of operation is as follows: As-

suming the parts to be in a settee position, as

shown in Fig. 1, it is converted into a bed by first pulling the knob 31 somewhatso that the uprights 27 will be taken from under the rear part of the settee portion 20; then the folding bed portion 11 is turned from the vertical to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3. Such movement of the portion 11 causes the bars 21 to move the seat portion 20 downwardly and somewhat to the rear, out of the way, as seen in Fig. 3.

l/Vhen it is desired to change the device from a bed to a settee, the folding bed portion 11 is turned to the upright position and the arms 21 willforce the seat portion 20 forwardly and upwardly and the rollers 23 will ride up on the tracks 24, and as the seat portion goes up the spring hinges will cause the uprights 27 to follow the seat portion and to move into supporting position. Thus with this construction of parts, the bed portion is centrally supported and the seat portion is moved automatically down out of the way or up into the settee position as the bed is operated. A very advantageous feature lies in this construction for by it the bed portion, when moved into position, is brought within convenient distance from the floor.

W'hat I claim as my inventionand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A davenport including a frame having a front bar, a seat portion with its forward end adapted to be normally supported by said frame bar, uprights pivoted at their lower ends to the frame for supporting the rear part of the seat portion when in normal position, means for moving said uprights on their pivots, a folding bed portion. fulcrumed at its sides and between its ends to the rear partof the frame so that when turned downwardly, it will be supported by said frame bar, and bars secured to the folding bed portion and pivoted to said seat portion so that the seat portion will be moved out of and into position by the movement of said bed portion.

2. A davenport including a frame having a front bar, a seat portion with its forward end adapted to be normally supported by said frame bar, uprights pivoted at their lower ends to the frame for supporting the rear part of the seat portion when in normal position, means for moving said uprights on their pivots, a folding bed portion fulcrumed at its sides and between its ends to the rear part .of the'frame so as, when turned downwardly, to be supported by said frame bar, bars secured to the'folding bed port-ion and pivoted to said seat portion so that the seat portion will be moved out of and into position by the movement of said bed portion, and inclined tracks on the ends of the frame for supporting and guiding the forward part of the seat portion during its movements.

'3. A davenport including a frame having a front bar, a seat portion with its forward end adapted to be normally supported by said frame bar, uprights for supporting the rear part of said seat portion, spring hinges for pivoting the lower endsof said uprights to the frame, a cord extending from the upper part of said uprights to the front part of the device for drawing said uprights from under theseat portion, a folding bed portion. fulcrumed at its sides and between its ends to the rear part of the frame so as, when turned downwardly, to be supported by said frame bar, bars secured to the folding bed portion and pivoted to said seat portion so that the seat portion will be moved out of and into position byithe movement of said bed portion, rollers on the lower front corners of the seat portion, and inclined tracks on the end of the frame for supporting and guiding the forward part ofthe seat portion during its movements.
