Be it known that I, KNUTE A. RUETHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Furniture, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to combination furniture; and it has for its object to provide an improved, efficient, and durable construction of a combined chair and table, a further object being to combine therewith an auxiliary seat to be used with the article when employed as a table.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying' drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved article of furniture arranged asa table, partially broken away. Fig'. 2 is a front elevation, partly in vertical section, on the two lines 2 4 and 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig'. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing' the device adapted for use as a chair, the position of the parts to provide a table and table-seat being shown in dotted lines. Fig'. 4 is an enlarged transverse detail section which is taken on the line 2 4, Fig. 3. Fig. is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail plan section on theline 6 6, Fig'. 3, showing' the auxiliary seat pushed in; and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the auxiliary seat drawn out.

1 represents the back legs, and 2 the front legs, which support a main seat 3, and from the main seat 3 the back legs are continued upwardly to form standards or stanchions 4, while the front legs 2 are continued upwardly to form standards or stanchions 5, the latter being' substantially the same in height as the rear standards 4, and the rear standards 4 are connected to the front standards 5 by horizontal arm-pieces 6 7, at the rear end of each of Serial No. 107,726. (No model.)

which, on the inner side, is arranged a supporting stud or pivot 8. ward each other and eng'ag'e in grooves 9, formed in the outer faces of two strips 10, constituting' the sides of a frame or holder l0 for the cushion 11, which constitutes the back of the chair when arranged in an upright position, as shown in Fig'. 3. vThese side strips 10 are rigidly secured to a table-top 12, which is of sufficient dimensions to rest squarely upon the horizontal arm-pieces 6 7 when it is arranged in a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when arranged in an upright position, as shown in Fig'. 3, it serves as a back to the chair, of which the arm-pieces 6 7 constitute the arms. The grooves 9 are of suiiicient length to permit the table-top 12 to be pushed rearwardly or toward the left, as viewed in Fig'. 1, until it can be turned into an upright position, whereupon it will drop until the pivots engage in oblique notches 13, formed at the inner ends of the grooves 9 in the side strips 10, which will cause the tabletop, which then serves as a chair-back, to tilt rearwardly at its upper end and forwardly at its lower end until it rests against the standards 4 or some other fixed part of the strueture, the grooves and notches 9 13 being' terminated slightly below the center or 1nidlength of the side strips 10, so as to be below the center of gravity, whereby the back will be heavier at the top and possess a no1'- mal tendency to tilt in the inclined position. (Shown in Fig'. 3.)

To convert the device into a table, the upper edge of the table-top 12 is pulled for wardly until it falls upon the arm-pieces 6 7, whereupon it may be slid along' until the ends of the grooves 9 come against the pivots 8, which serve as stops to limit further forward motion of the table-top 12. In order that the table-top 12 may beheld down against the armpieces 6 7, so as to permit the article to be lifted by the table-top 12, one of the side strips 10 may be provided with a spring-catch 14 or other suitable device let into a recess 15 in the outer side of said side strip 10 and adapted to engage under one of the arm-pieces 7, as shown in Fig'. 4, when the table -top 12 is lowered.

These pivots 8 project tol IOO On the underside of the main seat 3 is provided an auxiliary seat 16, which is supported and guided by flanges 17, secured to the under side of the main seat 3 in such a manner that it may be pulled out, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, when desired .for use, and when thus pulled out its inner end is supported by the flanges 17, while its outer end may be supported by a drop-leg 18, hinged at 19 to the under side of auxiliary seat 16, the outward movement of the latter being limited by pendent lugs 20 coming against pins or stops 21, projecting inwardly from the inner sides of iianges 17. When the auxiliary seat 16 is pushed into place under the main seat 3, the leg 18 is supported in a horizontal position by any suitable catch 22.

With a combined chair and table thus constructed it will be seen that the rigid legs 1 and 2 and standards 4 and. 5 and horizontal arm-pieces 6 7 constitute a frame and adequate support for the table-top, while at the same time serving with equal efciency as arms for the device when used as an arm-chair.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. Combination furniture comprising rigid rear legs having standards rising therefrom, rigid front legs having standards rising therefrom, the arm-pieces, supported on the rear and front standards, a frame having side strips located between the arm-pieces and pivoted to the rear ends thereof,l a table-top secured to the frame and adapted to rest upon the armpieces or against the rear legs, a main seat se` cured to the legs, flanges, beneath the main seat, having transverse stops, and an auxiliary sliding seat supported on the flanges for seating a person at the table.

2. Combination furniture comprising rigid rear legs having standards rising therefrom, rigid front legs having standards rising therefrom, the arm-pieces, supported on the rear and front standards, a frame having side strips located between the arm-piecesand pivoted to the rear ends thereof, a table-top secured to the frame and adapted to rest upon the armpieces or against the rear legs, a main seat secured to the legs, iianges, beneath ,the main seat, having transverse stops, an auxiliary sliding seat supported on the flanges for seating a person at the table, having depending lugs adapted to engage the stops, a leg hinged to the4 auxiliary seat, and a catch beneath the main seat for supporting the leg of the auxiliary seat in folded position.
