IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CHAIRS AND LOUNGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,537, dated July 16, 1872.

Combined Chair and Lounge.

My invention consists in a chair constructed in the manner too fully explained hereafter to need preliminary description, so that it can be readily converted into a lounge.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined chair and lounge as it appears when arranged for reclining purposes; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same as it appears when' converted into a chair; and Figs. 3 and 4, modifications of parts of my invention.

A hollow base, A, supported on legs a a, is arranged to contain a frame, B, for supporting the cushions when arranged for reclining purposes. This frame may be made in two parts, one arranged to slide into the other, and both to slide beneath the frame, as shown, the two parts being supported by legs, and being constructed in a manner which will be readily understood without explanation, so as to be moved outward to the position shown by dotted lines, or inward within the base, where it may be concealed by suitable hangings or drapery.

The frame B may be made in different ways. For instance, a frame to be expanded and contracted may be constructed by adopting the well-known mechanical device 'termed lazytongs, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3. The back D is permanently secured to the base A, and the arm E is so hinged to one edge of the back that it can be made to assume either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The arm E, however, is connected by a web, I), or its equivalent, to the opposite edge of the back D, the lower edge of this arm being hinged to the base A. To this base'is fitted a permanent cushion, G, to which or to the base is hinged an upholstered frame, H, and to the latter a similar upholstered frame, H, these parts being so hinged together that the frame H can be folded with its upholstered side against the cushion G, while the frame H can be turned with its plain side against the plain side of the frame H, the whole thus forming a properly-upholstered seat, as shown in Fig.2.

It has not been deemed necessary to illustrate or describe the fastenings by which the arms are retained in these different positions, as various available attachments may be used for the purpose.

The upholstered arm E, when released, will fall to and be retained by the web b, or its equivalent, in the proper inclined position to serve as a head-rest, and the arm E is turned outward so as to form a continuation of the back and permit theupholstered frames H and H to be folded down onto the extended frame B and form a continuous cushion for reclining purposes. It will be unnecessary to explain how the lounge may be readily reconverted into the easy-chair shown in Fig. 2. As the back of a chair is generally somewhat higher than that of a lounge, I propose, in some instances, to adapt the back D to guiding-posts w w, as shown in Fig. 4:, instead of permanently securing it to theseat, as before described, so that it can be raised when used as the back of achair, and lowered when the chair is converted into a lounge.

I claim as my invention- 1. A combined chair and lounge, having two arms which may be brought parallel with each other, and in which one arm is hinged at its lower edge to the base and is connected by a web or its equivalent to the back of the seat,

all substantially as and for the purpose here.
