U ITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRIET J. BUELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN Pl LLOWS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,504, dated February 19, 1878; application filed January 26, 1878.
. New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillows, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved invalidpillow or head-and-back support, its object being to afiord a fixed arrangement of pillows for use during the day or night, and adapted,
while supporting generally the upper portions of the body, to conform to the shape of the back and proper position of the head and neck.
To this end my invention consists in the combination, with the fixed inclined cushion, of a combined pillow-cover and adjustable support, whereby back and head cushions may be retained in suitable positions for the comfort of the patients, and adjusted for the accommodation of either adults or children, or persons of different height.
The apparatus which I have produced will now be described with reference to the accompanyin g drawing, in Which Figure l is a perspective view of my invention as when arranged upon a bed in position for use. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 shows the apparatus folded, and Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the apparatus in position for use.
The letterA designates a base-frame, to one end ofwhich is hinged acushion-covered frame, B, having a hinged folding support, 0, the foot of which, when the apparatus is in position for use, rests against a suitable shoulder or ledge, a, formed in the end of the baseframe.
To the top edge of the cushion-frame is attached a loop or staple, D, to which is attached a combined pillow support and cover, E, which consists of a doubled strip of linen, tying in the longitudinal center of the cushion and extending nearly to the foot thereof.
The two parts of the strip of linen, which I call a pillow-holder, are stitched together at intervals of their length by transverse seams, which are sufficiently far apart to form between them loops or holders 6 6, into two of which are placed pillows F F, which are easily removable and replaceable, so that the pillowholder may be detached for washing.
The pillow-holding loops are so situated that the upper pillow F may be used to support the head, and the pillow F to form a support for the hollow of the back of a person reclinin g thereon.
The upper ends of the strip E are not attached together, but form separate flaps ff, one of which, f, is passed through the staple D, and is provided with buttons g, and the other with corresponding button-holes, so that the pillow-holder may be adjusted higher or lower upon the inclined cushion, as desired.
When in use my invention should stand upon a bed, with the rear end of its base against the head-board, in order that it may be prevented from slipping, and so that an invalid may recline easily and securely upon the cushions. When not in use the support 0 may be folded against the cushion-frame, which may then be turnedvdown flat upon the base, as shown in Fig. 3, bringing the whole into compact form for storing away or transportation.
The construction of my invention is light, simple, and cheap, and may be varied to suit the exigencies of the case in which it is used. For instance, in summer, instead of a main inclined cushion, I use a frame of open canework, similar to the ordinary cane-seat of chairs, or a suitably-supported air-cushion may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a fixed inclined cushion or body-support, B, of a combined adjustable pillow cover and holder, E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
HARRIET J. BUELL.
