HEAD-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,915, dated February 15, 1887.

Application filed July 10, 1885. Renewed December 7, 1886. Serial No. 220,043. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS FERRY, of Wilmington,in the county of New Castle,andin the State of Delaware, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Head-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View of my device detached from the person, and Fig. 2 is a like view of the same when in use.

Letters of like name and kind refer to similar parts in each of the figures.

Ihe design of my invention is to furnish a comfortable, convenient, and inexpensive rest for the head of a person while occupying a car-seat, chair, &c.; and said invention consists, principally, in the construction of the shoulder-bearings, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

It consists, further, in the means employed for fastening the device in position, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

It consists, finally, in the device as a whole, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.

My support is composed, principally, of a frame, A, which". is constructed from heavy metal wire, in the form shown, its upper end being provided with alaterallyextended part or head, a, from which the wires extend in opposite curves downward and outward for a short distance, from thence downward in parallel lines, from thence inward a short dis tance, and from thence to their lower ends. Said wires are parallel, and at the lower ends are turned forward, upward, and inward, so as to form of each a loop, a. The head-section a is covered with an elastic flexible fabric, 13, which is secured to the wire at its upper edge, but is unsupported at its lower edge, and furnishes for the head of the user a comfortable hearing. Across each one of the shoulder-sections a is stretched vertically a strip,

the person, as shown in Fig. 2, the section a. forming a support for the back of the head, and the sections a coming across the shoulders, while the lower portions of the frame A. rest upon the chest of the person and are held thereon by means of a strap, D, which engages with one of the loops to, and from thence passes rearward around the back and is connected to the other loop.

In order that the placing the device in or re moving it from position may be easily accomplished, the portion of each end of the strap D which comes into engagementwith the loops a is provided at short intervals with buttons (1, which have such height as to prevent them from being drawn through said loop. Said strap, thus provided, is engaged with loops a by passing it edgewise downward through openings at the upper ends of said loops.

WVhen in use the device furnishes a comfortable rest for the head, whether the person sits erect or in a reclining position, and as the pressure of said device is equally distributed between the shoulders and back, and as at each point of contact there is an elastic bearing that adapts itself to the form, no restraint is felt; nor does continued use of the device weary its user.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention. what I claim is 1. In combination with the frame A of a head-rest formed with the shoulder-sections a a", the pieces of webbing G G, stretched across said sections and secured to the frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the head-rest frame formed with the upper portion across which suitable webbing can be stretched,and with the offsets forming shoulder-sections a a), flexible strips stretched across the shouldersections.

and attached at their upper and lower ends to the portions of the frame forming the upper and lower ends of the offsets, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

3. In combination with the frame A of a head-rest provided at or near the lower ends of its side arms with loops a, the strap provided with buttons or studs adapted to engage the loops, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
