C. L. PUDRIWTH.
GDMBINBD CHAIR AND GOUGH.
APPLIGATION FILED A211. 19. 1907.

UNITED STATES CHARLES L. PUDRITH, OF VJ'ARREN, OHIO.
COMBINED CHAIR AND COUCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. PUDnrrH, of fari-en, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements .in Combined Chairs and Couches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a sin1pl and inexpensive article of furniture which may be readily converted into either a chair or couch.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 a side elevation, showing a chair. Fig. is al similar view of a couch. fragmentary view of the back-section. Fig. le is a fragmentary view of the seat section. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of details. F ig. (3 is an end view of the couch.
Veferring to the drawings, particularly to Fig. 1, 1 designates the seat section of a chair having legs 2; and 3 the back section, hinged or otherwise secured to the seat section, preferably by means of a rod 4 in the seat section and arms 5 of the back section. Both the seat and back sections are suitably upholstered. G designates the arm sections, likewise upholstered, each having on its outer tace bars 'T which are designed to extend into keepers S secured to the side bars oit the seat section.
I'Vhen it is desired to convert the chair into a couch, arms 6 are removed, and their bars T are inserted into keepers 9 in one end of the chair section, the two arms conjointly 'Forming a head-rest, being within the planes of the sides or" the seat-section. Legs 10, hinged or otherwise pivotally secured to the upper end of the back-section 3, are withdrawn from a recess, wherein they are normally concealed by a panel l2, and thereupon the operator bears down on a crank-han- Specification of Letters Patent.

`dle 13 of a rod 14 in the seat-section to disengage a pawl l5 carried thereby from a segmental rack 16 fast on rod f1. As the back-section is lowered into a horizontal position springs 17 secured to arms 18 of rod e are put under tension. In this way a chair may be readily converted into a couch. `When it is desired to again convert the article into a chair it is only necessary to again release pawl l5 from rack 16, and' spring 17 will raise the baclesection 3. The latter is then locked in position relative to the seat-section by pawl l5. the recess provided therefor, and are concealed by the panel section 12; and the bars of the arm sections are restored in keepers S.
The advantages of my invention are obvious. It will be seen that an attractive, upholstered piece of furniture may be thus readily utilized either as a chair or as a couch.
I claim as my invention:
l. A convertible chair and couch comprising a seat section, a back section hinged thereto, two arm sections, and meansfor securing each of the latter to the opposite sides or both of them to the end o't the seat section, the two arms conjointly being within the planes of the sides of the seat section when secured to the end thereof.
2. A convertible chair and couch having, in combination, a seat-section, a back section, arms carried by the latter, a rod in said seat-section with which said arms engage, arms carried by said rod, springs scoured to said latter arms, a segmental rack on said rod within the seat-section, a second rod in said seat-section having a pawl engaging said rack, and a crank-handle on said second rod at one side of the seat-section.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

The legs 10 are then replaced in
