OKUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a full,.clear, concise, and exact descrlptlon, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification. My invention relates to chairs. and concerns itself more particularly with the production of a chair to which is added a collapsible element or elements which when unfolded provide additional seating space.

My invention is primarily designed to S0 arrange these collapsible elements that they are entirely hidden. from view when in their collapsed or disappearing position.

In the preferred form of my invention 1 utillze a chair having 'sultable side arms into which additional collapsible seat'strucconstructed in accordance with my inven tion, the collapsible seat structures being shown in their unfolded positlons;

Specification of Lettersratent.

Referring more-particularly to Fig. 1, I show a chair havingjthe seat portion 1, the

back portion .2, andthe side arms 3 and 4.-

The side arms are'provided upon the interior faces with an upholstering section 5.

the upholstering sections 5, all as more clearlyapparent from Fig; 4. The back rest 11 of the auxiliary seat structure has preferably a strengthening rim 12 which is pivoted between thev upper backward portion of the arms 3 and 4 and the side rails 13 through the agency of pivots 14 and 15.

This back portion 11 can thus swing about these pivots 14 and 15.from the disappearing position shownin Fig. 4 to its unfolded position shown in Fig.1.

Theback portion-11 also carries the seat portion 10Ywhich is pivoted thereto by the studs 16 so that this seat structure may be 10 carries a leg 21, which leg is also arranged in a collapsible manner as more clearly illus trated in F igs. 6 and7, the seat portlon 10 having a pin 22 provided with a head 23 which cooperates with the rounded eye 24 of the leg 21. The pin 22 is square as shown more clearly in. Fig. 6 and may enter the recess 25 radiating from the opening in the eye 24 so that as the seat portion 10 reaches its lowermost position the leg 21 being pushed upwardly causes the squared pin 22 to enter the radial slot 25 and thus hold the leg 21, against turnin As soon as the seat portion 10 is lifte upwardly however,

' outer forward extremity of the seat portion 7 then the pin22 enters the opening in the eye and the leg 21 may thereafter rotate around into the position shown in Fig. 4. A spring catch 26 is provided upon the back portion and a spring stop 27, the spring stop serving to prevent jarring the seat portion when it'is pushed upwardly, and the catch 26 engaging the pin 28 to hold the seat portion in its collapsed position of Fig. 4. When the seat portion is thus elevated and held in position the back portion 11 may then be swung contra-clockwise (Fig. 5) into the disappearing position shown in Figs. 2 and, 4' where this collapsed seat structure is held in its collapsedposition by having the catch 29 enter the recess 30 pro-- vided in the rim 12. The catch 29 is controlled by a suitable push button 31, all of which is more clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. The catch portion 29 is pivoted and held in its locking position by the spring 32 so that whenever the collapsible seat structure is in its folded position the spring 32 forces the catch into the recess 30. To release the auxiliary seat structure the push button 31 is pressed, whereupon the seat may be drawn outwardly and the seat portion dropped into the position shown in Fig. 1.

By referring to Fig. 9, I show my invention as applied to a rocking chair identical in its essential parts to the structure of Figs. 1 to 8, the chair in this event having the rockers 33. The seat portions 10 are provided with legs 3% having rocker elements 35 so that the auxiliary seat structures may be supported by rocking elements.

From what has been described it is thought the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.

Having however thus described several forms which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In combination with a chair comprising a bottom frame, a. back including side posts extending upwardly from the rear ends of the side rails of the bottom frame, and arms extending upwardly from the forward ends of the side rails of the bottom frame and thence rearwardly to the upper portions of the side posts of the back, of a collapsible seat structure having apart hingedly connected to one of the side posts of the back, said collapsible seat structure when in collapsed condition being of a size and shape corresponding to the size and shape of the recess provided between one of the chalr arms, the adjoining side rail of the bottom frame, and side post of the back, and adapted to fold into said recess with its outer face substantially flush with the sidefaces of the said chair arm, bottom rail, and back post, the thickness of the collapsed seat structure not exceeding the width of said chair arm, back post and bottom rail, said collapsible seat structure being adapted whenunfolded to form an additional seat alongside of the main chair structure.
