UNITED STATES i PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN G. SMITH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,141, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 26, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNC. SMITH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Oots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view of the cot in using position. Fig. II is an enlarged view folded. Fig. III is a top view folded. Fig. IV is an enlarged perspective view of part of one of the hinges. Fig. V is an enlarged detail view of the frame and the hinge attached. Fig. VI is an enlarged detail view showing a section of the inside of thefranie Fig. VII is an,
with leg and brace attached. enlarged detail side view showing the position of a leg and brace when folded. Fig. VIII is a view of leg and brace folded, showing part of the frame.
My invention relates to the construction of folding cots; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the frame, 2 the legs, and 3 the braces, one end of which is attached to the legs and the other to the body of the frame, thus holding the legs in using position. The braces have rule-joints 4, permitting them andthe legs to be folded.
The frame is constructed in three sections, the two end sections being made to fold upon the center one, and they are connected to the center section by hinges, consisting cach of two triangular portions 7, one part of each hinge being secured to the middle part of the cot by rivets 8, and the other part of each hinge is connected to an end section by rivets 9. The two parts of each hinge are secured together at top by a pin passing through per- (No model.)
forations 10, and the lower points of the two parts of each hinge come together, Fig. V, and by thus abutting, take the entire strain of the pressure brought upon the ends of the cot, there being a space l2 between the body and each end when the latter is in using position. (See Fig. VI.) The lower ends of the hinges are perforated at 1l; but this is for the purpose of making duplicates of them, so that they can be placed on either side of the cot, and not for the purpose of connecting them at this point. The extreme lower end 20 of one member of each hinge rests against a shoulder 21 of the adjacent end of the other member, this shoulder being shown plainly in Fig. IV and by dotted lines in Fig. V.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a cot consisting of a central portion and end wings, the hinges fixed to the sides and connecting the end Wings to the central portion, so that they may be folded thereon, said hinges consisting of two parts, each connected at the top of the tom of the cot, whereby the ends are adaptas set forth.
2. In combination with a cot consisting of a central portion and end wings having spaces between the contiguous ends, the hinges connecting the end wings to the central portion, so that they may be folded thereon, said hinges consisting of two triangular pieces having openings at 10 and ll to receive pivot-pins, depending on which side of the cot the hinges are placed, said pieces being pivoted together at the top of the cot and having abutting lower ends, substantially as set forth.
