NICHOLAS S. TIEMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A.
- TIEMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,336, dated December 29, 1874; application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS S. TIEMANN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Table, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of a combination of jointed braces and connecting-bars, jointed legs, and a jointed table-top, in such a manner that the legs are caused to fold and unfold and assume their proper. position in each condition by the top when it is folded and unfolded, thus affording a very simple and convenient folding table, requiring no care or skill beyond the closing-and opening the top for adjusting it.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved table. Fig. 2 is a plan of the table inverted. Figure 3 is an end elevation of it in the folded condition.
The top A is divided in two parts at the middle, B, and hinged together by joints O in the frame 'neces D, which meet at the joint of the top. The legs E are jointed to these framepieces at their outer ends, and also connected to them by braces F, the braces being pivoted to the legs and connected to the frame-pieces in a long slot, G, allowing them to slide toward and from the joints H. Coincident with the joints I of the braces with the legs, rods or bars J are pivoted to the legs, connecting them with pendants K from the hinge-joints G, the rods being jointed to the pendants in the plane of their connection with the legs, and the pendants being jointed at O. The combination of. these connecting-bars and pendants with the braces and legs has the effect of preventing the legs from spreading apart when the table is set up, which the braces could not prevent, on account of the slots, which are necessary to allow the legs to fold, and they also draw the legs into the vertical position or perpendicular to the table-top when the table'is unfoldech and the braces prevent them from being drawn beyond the proper position by the upper ends coming against the inner ends of the slots. By the joints of the bars with the pendants being the same distance below the pivots E that the joints I are, these rods offer no resistance to the folding of the legs into line with the framepieces D, as in Fig. l, for which the braces are connected to the said pieces by the slots. L represents lockinghooks on the under side of the legs, for fastening the table open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the jointed connectingbars J and the pendants K with the top and legs of a folding table, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specified.
