Nirnn STATES AinNT FOLDIN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 16, 1898 To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, CALVIN F. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in portable folding cots; and the object is to simplify the construction and increase the portability and compactness of the same.

To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. v

The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit'of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.

The same reference characters indicate the Figure 1 is a side elevation ofiny improved cot as it appears when extended and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cot folded. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of one of the lazytong levers. Fig. 5 is a detail section of the manner of securing the iiexible bottom to the sides of the cot.

1 and 2 denote a series of crossed `levers fulcrumed together on the rivet3 and'connected together on the lazy-tongs systempas shown. 4 4 denote the rungs or round-braces connecting said levers with their corresponding members on the opposite-side. As shown in Fig. 4, these levers are formed with parallel `edges and are thicker in the center, where they are connected by the rivet 3, and gradually taper to each end. The lower contiguous ends of these levers are pivoted together by the rivets 5 5 and their upper contiguous ends by the screw-eyes 6 6.

7 denotes the flexible bottom, formed with the parallel side hems 8 8 and corresponding end hems 9 9.

A"their cylindrical ends extend through the upper ends of the outer end levers l and 2, and 12 12 represent ferrules which encompass the outer ends of said braces, and 13 13 denote Vthe folding handles, which are pivoted thereto by a rivet 14, extending through the brace and ferrule, as shown.

15 15 represent a fiexible sash-cord which extends through the parallel side helns S S and the screw-eyes 6 6, and its outer ends are suitably fixed in the transverse braces 10 10. 1G 16 denote spring-clips which are pivoted at one end on the rivets 17, and their hooked ends 1S are arranged to engage a stud-pin 1 9 to prevent the cot collapsing when extended, vand when the cot is folded, as shown in 2, the clip extends across the inner sides of the handles, and its hooked end is Vsecured to the stud-pin 20 to secure the handles in place and retain the cot in a folded position. This construction enables me to produce a strong substantial cot which when not in use may be folded up and packed away in a very small space, whichwhen extended will form a comparatively rigid bed structure, which is particularly adapted for emergency uses in police patrol-wagons and hospital-ambulances,

. `andwill also be valuable on account of the limited space occupied when folded in dwellings, offices, aboard ship, and the like..

I-Iavin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

The combination in a folding cot, of a lazytong lever forming the opposite parallel sides of the cot, the screw-eyes 6 6 connecting the upper contiguous ends of said levers,the transverse braces 10 10, thehan'dles pivoted to the outer ends of said braces, the flexible bottom formed with the parallel side hems 8 S and the end hems 9 9 encompassing'said braces and the cords 15 15 extending through. said side hems and screw-eyes and having their outer ends fixed in said transverse braces l0 10, substantially as shown and described.
