To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL C. CHITTIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and to the convenience and needs of the user and which when not required for immediate use may be reduced to a compact bun- "dle for convenience and storage and handling thereby adapting the device for tourists and out door requirements.

The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. lapsedand'adjusted. The sections E and F constitute legs for supporting the device in horizontal position, as indicated in Fig. 5.

The section D is essentially a brace and cooperates with leg sections G and H which are pivotally connected to each other, the section G being pivotally connected to the section A and the section H being detachably connected to the, said section A. In either adaptation of the device the leg sec tions G and H are held in the required adjusted position by means of the brace section D and the adjustable pivot connection between the sections G and H.

Each of the main sections comprises sidebars which are pivotally connected by means of plates 1, two being provided at each joint and disposed upon opposite sides of the bars of adjacent sections to whichthey are pivotally connected. Each of the plates 1 is formed with a transverse slot 2 which receives a pin 3 projecting laterally from one of the bars Qwhereby provisionis had for a limited relativelmovement between the sections to allow for various adjustments in'the conversion of the device from one adaptation to the other and in the adjustment of the same in: either adaptation, "The "main sections are of different relative lengths and IOU the section A constitutes the bottom of the chair, as indicated in Figs. '1 and 3 and forms the head section of the cot,'as shown in Fig. 5. In either adaptation the inclination of the main section A may be varied to suit the convenience of the occupant. The intermediate section B constitutesthe back of the chair, as shown most clearly in Figs.

, l and 3 and the section C forms the foot section of the cot. A covering 4 is applied to the sections and may consist of canvas, due}: or other textile, said covering being secured at its edges to the side bars of the respective sections and having edge portions cutaway so as'to clear the joints. One end of the covering 4 is provided-with a hem or tuck 5 to receive a cross piece 6, Fig. 2. The cross piece 6 constitutes the front of the chair bottom, and the head rest of the cot and serves to bracingly connect the outer ends of the side bars comprising the leg section H. For this purpose the ends of the cross 'piece 6 are provided with headed studs 7 which engage slotted plates 8 secured to the innerv faces of the side bars comprising the leg section H. This is shown most clearly in Fig. 9.

The sections D, E and F are of similar formation, each consisting of crossing bars pivotally connected at the point of crossing to admit .of the sections folding one against the other, as shown most clearly in Fig. 7. The bars are oifset at their point of crossing so that when folded they may he one against the-other. While these sections may be constructed in any manner it is preferred to construct them of wooden bars which are connected .by metal straps :9. which admits of the bars lying in the same-plane so as to fold closely one against the other. Each of the leg sections E and F is provided with a brace 10 which is pivoted at one end to one of the bars and is adapted to have its opposite end detachably engage the compan- 45.

' The bars of the leg section G are connected to the inner ends of the bars of the main section A by curved plates 16 which are rigidly secured to the bars G and pivotally connected to the bar A. Each of the bars G is provided upon its inner side near its upper end with a headed stud 18 which is adapted to operate in the slot 19 0f a longitudinally slotted plate 20 secured to the outer side of each bar or member of the leg section H. A toothed bar 21 pivoted at its upper end to the bar H is adapted toengage the headed stud l8 and hold the later in the required adjusted position. The toothed bar 21 performs the office of a latch and is retained in operative position by means. of a keeper 22 which is pivotally mounted on the bar H near the lower end of the plate 20.

Each of the bars H is provided upon the outer side near its upper end with a slotted plate 23 which is adapted to engagea headed stud 24 upon the inner side of the outer end of'each bar ,ofthe section A. From the foregoing takenin connection with the accompanying drawings it will be understood that the 'inventionprovides an article which may be reduced to a compact bundle to be conveniently carried in .an' automobile or (otherv vehicle for out door-use or which may be stored so as to occupy a minimum amount of space and also to admit of convenience in handling. :When required for use the device may bexqu-ickly set up to be used either as a chair ,or as a cot. When the device is required for use as a cot it may be arranged,

as indicated in Fig. 5 and the inclination of the section A may be changed to elevate the head 50f the occupant so as to secure ease and comfort. 7 V v The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be consideredqthe preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to'be-iunderstood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article substantially as herein specified, comprising a plurality of similarly formed main sections and a plate connecting adjacent sections and transversely slotted intermediate of its ends and having one end pivoted to an end of one of the sections and having its other end pivoted to the other section a distance from the end thereof, and fastening means connecting the end of the last mentioned section to the intermediate slotted portion of the plate.

2. In an article of the character set forth, side members, bars having pivotal connection with opposite end portions of the side members, said bars crossing an adjustable pivot connection between the bars at their point of crossing and means for securing the pivot connection in relative adjusted position.

3. In an article of the character set forth, side members, bars having pivotal connection with opposite end portions of the side members, a longitudinally slotted plate on one of the bars, a pivot stud on the other Copies of this patent may be obtained for the slotted plate and a bar coacting with pivot stud in toothed latch for securing the adjusted position.

4. In an article of the character specified, collapsible side members, supporting means therefor including pivotally connected cross ing bars, pivoted brace bars hingedly connected at one end to the collapsible members, slotted plates and studs detachably connecting the brace bars at the opposite end to the supporting means and latch elements retaining the studs and plates in adjusted position.

5. In an article of the character set forth, collapsible side members, a le section pivoted at one end to the collapsi le side members, asecond leg section detachably connected to the opposite ends of the side members and having adjustable pivotal connection with the first mentioned leg section, a cross piece detachably connecting the ends of the members comprising a second leg section, and a brace section having pivotal connection with the side members and detachable connection with the members of the sec- 0nd leg section.
