Be it known that l, MARGIN STEFANSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ster# ling, county of Arenac, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic Beds, o-f which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in articles of furniture, and particularly to beds.

The principal object of the invention is t0 provide a bed frame which may be drawn laterally outward, so as to accommodate two or more persons, or collapse to form a single bed.

A further object is to provide means whereby the frame elements when extended are held from inadvertently collapsing or held confined when in a closed position, which is the normal condition of the bed.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a bed frame made in accordance with the invention, the parts being in a folded position.

Fig. 2 is an end view of the same shown in an extended posi-tion, parts being broken away in order to disclose the construction.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the mattress used in connection with the frame.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the posts of thebed, preferably of the usual tubular metallic construction, surmounted by ornamental knobs 11, and provided with casters 12 at their lower ends so that the bed frame may be readily moved from place to place upon the floor of the room. These posts are preferably higher at the head than at the rear, and are connected by longitudinal rails 14:, as is usual in metal beds of this type of construction.

Engaged with each of the posts 1() are pairs of tubular elements 15 and 15', respectively near the upper and lower parts of the posts, the same being of such length that when the bed is in a collapsed or folded position, as shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the tubes are inintimate contactso thatno break ,or "opening appears between them.

A pair of bars 18 and 18, formed with forks 19 at each of their ends, are adapted to enter the open ends of the tubular elements 18 and 18 and journaled in the forks, on the pins 20, are rollers 2l, having curved faces and adapted to lit neatly within the tubes.

Secured near the upper sides of the bars 18 and 18, are flat springs 23, having angular projections 24C at'their outer free ends, upon which are mounted small sleeves 25, engageable in openings 26 or 27, formed in the tubular elements 15 and 15', the openings 26 being near their outer ends, while the openings 27 are relatively close to the posts 10 so that when the spring carried sleeves 25, which act as detents, are engaged in the openings 26, the head and foot elements of the bed frame are held in an extended position, and conversely, when the sleeves are engaged in the -openings 27, the head and foot elements are held closely together.

In order to hold the extending tubular elements '15 and 15 in proper spaced relation, and also for in the ornamental effects 0btained, they are connected by vertical rods 28, while a single vertical rod 30 engages between the bars 18 and 18', recesses 31 being provided in the opposed sides of the tubular elements, at their ends, into which the rods 30 enter when the frames are in closed position.

A wire or like mattress l10, provided with side elements 4:1, is adapted to be used in connection with the bed frame, the side elements 42 and 43 being connected by headed pins 44, slidable in the slots 415, the pins being rigidly set in the 'elements 42, while the slots are formed in the corresponding elements 113, thus permitting the mattress to be pllapsed or extended as indicated best in iig. 5.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a convenient bed frame 'has been disclosed which, in addition to its use for a single person, may be extended by merely depressing the detents 25, and drawing the sides apart, whereupon the detents enter into the outermost openings, formed in the tubular end elements, holding the same ext-ended so that the bed may be used for two or more persons.
