Description

C. W. JOYNT.
FIRE ESCAPE.
110. 311,661. Patented Feb. 3, 188
DTYEN TOR.
BY MW1 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES V. JOYNT, OF MAKANDA, ILLINOIS.
Fl RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,661, dated February 3, 1885.
(No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. J OYNT, of Makanda, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the class of fireescapes employing foldingladders as means for,
descending to the ground; and it consists in a ladder formed of series of parallel side rods provided at their lower ends with right-angled sockets for receiving the ladder'rounds, and at their upper ends with eyes for receiving the round of the adjoining section' of the ladder.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 show-s the position of the box for holding the ladder. Fig. 2 shows the ladder unfolded in condition for use. Fig. 3 shows the ladder folded. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the adjoining ends of theladder-sections; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of one of the joints.
My improved tirc-escape ladder is formed of side rods, A, each having formed on one end an eye, a, and provided at the opposite end with a right-angled socket, I), the-wooden or tubular-iron round B entering the sockets of two such rods, and receiving the eyes a of the rods of the adjoining section, and stops 0 secured to the rounds B, and confining the eyes a in their place adjoining the right-angled socket b. The sect-ions of the ladder decrease in width and length. toward the free end there- I of, and are capable of being compactly folded one within the other, forming a pyramidal it remains until required for use.
pile, as shown in Fig. 3. Theladder thus folded is placed in the box 0 at the window, where The ladder is suspended by two books or straps, D, which extend over the window-sill. The rounds B are secured in the socketsb by screws passing through the side of the socket, or in any other convenient manner, and the stops c may be at t-ached to the rounds in the same way, or they may be formed integral with the round.
For extra length a double ladder can be provided. At the lower or last section of escape may be attached a second ladder, at D, which u will fold in the same manner as first escape, and may be put in box requiring space oftwice the depth of the single ladder, which will not exceed over two and a half inches.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fire-esrape ladder formed of rods A, provided with eyes a, the right-angled sockets 12, secured to the rods A, and-the rounds B, entering the sockets b and secured therein, as described.
2. The combination, with a ladder formed of rods A, having eyes a, the right-angled sockets b, and the rounds B, of the hooks or straps D and box 0, as described.
3. The combination, in afire-es'cape ladder, of the rods A, having eyes a, the right-angled sockets 0, rounds B, and stops 0, as described.
