UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. SEGAR, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK.
FOLDING COT ANDBEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 257,085, dated April 25, 1882..
Application filed March 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it knownthat I, CHARLES T. SEG-AR, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of' Utica, in the county of' Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Folding Gots and Bedsteads; and l do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had Vto the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of' my improved folding cot. Fig. 2 is an under side view of the same folded, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view.
This invention has relation to folding cots and bedsteads 5 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with the side rails and pivoted legs, of the double parallel folding connections extending `transversely between the legs of each end and the chains or other braces or ties.
The invention also consists in providing the upper bars of the parallel folding connections with extensions, which project under the side rails when the frame is unfolded, supporting the side rails and stiff'ening the frame, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the side rails of a cot or bedstead, the bearing-surface whereof may consist of canvas, wire-cloth, bands, or slats.
B B designate the legs, which are pivoted 5o tions, whereby the legs B B at each end of the frame are transversely connected. These connections consist of upper and lower jointed connectin g-bars, pivoted by their outer ends to the legs B, and by their middle or joint portions g to a vertical connection, F, whereby they are kept in parallel relation in all their movements. The outer ends, h, of the upper transverse folding bars, E, extend beyond the legs B closely under the side rails, A, affording, when unfolded, a strong support to said rails, stiifening the frame, and preventing the parallel folding connections from being bent downward out of position. Short braces k also serve to prevent these connections from being bent downward, said braces being connected to the lower jointed bar, E', and to the legs, as indicated in the drawings.
In folding the frame the parallel folding connections of the legs are pushed upward, bending at thejoints g as the legs B come together in parallel position. Then thelegs and connections are folded closely against the side rails.
In setting up or unfolding the frame the legs and their connections are first unfolded into position perpendicular to the direction of the side rails, which are then spread apart and secured by pushing the parallel moving connections downward until their jointed middle portions are horizontal and straight. At the same time the braces will become tense, holding the legs and connections securely.
At the head of the frame is the bolster or head-band m, which is used in connection with a cot-frame. Itis supported at the ends by the parallel bracket-sprin gs s, having each two arms, t, 'which are formed with coil-spring portions o just above the rails, to which the brackets are attached by their ends extending below the coils, as shown in the drawings. 9o
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Fatent, 1s
l. A folding cot or bedstead consisting of side rails, A, pivoted legs B, and double parallel folding connections extending transversely betweenthelegs ofeachend, and braces, substantially as specied.
2. The folding cot or bedstead consisting of the side rails, A, pivoted legs B, transverse roo parallel folding connecting-bars E E', jointed In testimony that I claim the `above I have in the middle and pivoted to a vertical eonhereunto subscribed my name in the presence neetion, F, and the chain-braces C, D, and lc, of two Witnesses.
Substantially as specified.

side rails and pivoted legs, the transverse parallelfoldingeonneetions extending transverse- Witnesses: 1y between the legs at each end, and the eX- THEO. B. DAVIES, tensions h under and supporting the rails, sub- M. C. BROWN.
