CHARLES T. SEGAR, or UTIOA, NEW YORK.
FOLDING BED OR C'OT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,298, dated April 21, 1885.
.Application filed June 24, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAS. T. SEGAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, iiithe county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds or Cots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters orfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side view of my device. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is also a bottom View folded, and Fig. 4 is an end view.
This invention has relation to folding cots; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the side rails of the cot, to which the webbing or fabric B is attached. 0 G are the legs, which are pivoted to the rails near the ends thereof, the pivots D extending transversely, so that when the legs are folded they will lie alongside the rails.
Each pair of legs is connected by a crossbar lever-frame extending transversely, and
consisting of the 'cross-leversE, pivoted to.
the lower portions of the legs, as at F, and together at the point of intersection G. Extensions H of these levers beyond the point of intersection are pivoted to the lockingarms K, the outer ends of which are pivoted to the upper portions of thelegs, as shown at L. The inner extensions, N ,of these arms, which are prolonged beyond the pivots P, are
of proper length to engage the upper edges be held firm and steady.

are first pulled out at rightangles to the rails,
this operation causing the side rails to .recede from each other through the action of the oblique braces S. Then by pulling the legs apart by their lower ends the locking-bars K are caused to spring downward into engagement with the cross-levers, throwing the latter into locked position, so that the legs will In closing the cot the operation is reversed, the legs being first pushed toward each other to loosen the locking-arms, after which the rails are pushed together.
V represents the bolster-strip, the ends of which are connected to wires 10, to which are pivoted the upper ends of the parallel springarms Z two on each sidethe lower ends of which'are pivoted to bearings a, secured to the rails near the head of the cotframe. pivotal portion of the inner spring -arm Z on each side, after passing through its bearing a terminates in a short crank arm, I), which is connected to the adjacent leg 0 by a link, d. WVhen the leg 0 is folded down, it draws the crank-arm b downward, and at the same time the arms Z are caused by said crank-arm to be folded down upon the sides of the cot-frame, and when the legs are unfolded the arms Z are raised and the bolsterstrip is stretched and held in position for use.
Having described this positiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the side rails of a cot, and the legs pivoted thereto, of the cross-levers E, pivoted to each other, to the locking-arms K, and to the lower portions of opposite legs, and the locking-arms K pivoted to the upper portions of saidlegs and to the extensions of said cross-levers, substantially as specified.
