Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. FOSTER, of Utica,in the county of Oneida and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,' and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective View of my improved crib. Fig. 2 shows details of the post-fastener in connection with the side and a portion of the cross-bar and a portion of the crib side. Fig. 3 shows details of construction, partially in section, showing more particularly a portion of the side rail, a portion of the crib, and details of the cornerfastener in section. Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in connection with a section of the post. Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of a peculiar latch or catch for securing the upper or swinging sides of the crib. Fig. 6showsaside elevation of the catch in its locking position. Fig. 7 shows an end view of the catch. Fig. 8 shows a plan view of the catch in its locked position. Fig. 9 shows an inside perspective view of the catch. Fig. 10 shows a portion of a bedpost in connection with a perspective of a modified form of device for holding the lower bar of the crib side. Fig. 11 shows in perspective the end of the lower bar of the crib side.

Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description of the device, A indicates the head-frame, and B the foot-frame, of the crib, consisting of bedposts, which may be designated by the common number 2, and suitable ornamental filiing connecting the posts. In each leg is fixed a headed projection, as shown in dotted lines at 2. The bed-frame proper consists of the side rails 3 and cross-bars or bed-frame end rails 4, secured together by a corner-fastener 5, secured on the end of the side rail by rivets 6. The said corner-fastener 5 is provided with a recess for receiving the depending web 4. of the end bar, and also has a shoulder 5 to hold the web in position in its recess against sidewise displacement. The end bars 4 are placed in the recesses for receiving them in the corner-fasteners by sliding the end in longitudinally with reference to the end rail. .The corner-fastener also includes a part sleeve portion 5", adapted to lit on the sideof the round post, said sleeve portion also being provided with a recess 5 for receiving the headed projection 2 including the neck thereof. On either side the recess 5 is provided wedging projections 5 ,adapted to wedge bet-ween the head of the projection and the side of the post. The up-- per end of the sleeve portion 5 is also provided with a recess or socket at m, adapted to receive the end of the lower bar 8 of the crib side. The recess 00 is open at the side, so as to receive the end of lower bar 8 sidewise, and the opening is preferably toward the inner side of the bed. The recess is provided with a pair of projections to, as better shown in the modified form of construction in Fig. 10. The end of the bar 8 is provided with a pair of parallel cross-notches 8 8, adapted to receive the projections 09' at when the bar is being placed or removed. The crib side consists of the said lower bar 8 and the upper bar 9, with a set of intermediate filling-spindles 10. The half-sleeve portion 5 of the cornenfastener may be terminated at a point immediately above the shoulder 5 and a separate bearing-piece J for the crib side bars 8 provided, as shown in Fig. 10. This piece is secured to the post by a rivet K. In either form of construction when the crib side is in either upright or dependent position the same is held in place at the lower side by the lugs 09. The crib sides are secured in their upper position by the latches 12, pivoted to the leg or post at 11 and having a sleeve-like end 12, adapted to partially embrace the end of the crib side bar 9, and also having a central projectionlQ", adapted to enter a hole in the end of the bar 9. When the latches 12 are thrown out, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, the crib sides can then be turned down to a suspended position, as indicated by the dotted outlines of the spindle 10 in Figs. 2 and 3. The arrangement of the parts of the corner-fastener 5, which engage with the side rail and cross-bar of the frame, are to one side with reference to the half-sleeve portion 5 of the corner-fastener, which engages on the post, whereby the crib side is permitted to take its suspended position in a vertical line, as indicated by the dotted outlines of the'spindie 10 in Figs. 2 and 3. The crib sides are also adapted to fold inwardly on the fabric F, stretched on the bed-frame, and it will be observed that the fabric, by reason of the peculiar form and arrangement of the corner-fasteners and end rails, is nearly in a plane with the crib side bars 8 and their pivotal points, so that the sides fold nicely on the fabric for the purpose of shipping or packing or other Wise.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a crib construction the combination of the bed-frame side rails, the crib side lower frame-rails, the head and foot frames including posts, corner-fasteners secured on the ends of the bed-frame rails extending above the plane of the frame-rail and having sockets in the extensions receiving the ends of the crib sideframe-rails, and having means for engagement with the posts, substantially as set forth.

2. In a crib construction, the combination of the bed-frame side rails, the bed-frame end rails, the crib sides, the head and foot frames including round posts and the corner-fasteners secured to the ends of the frame side rails and having shouldered recesses holding the said bed-frame end rails in a plane above that of the side rails, and sockets receiving the ends of the lower frame-rail of the crib sides in a plane above that of the cross-bars, and having a half-sleeve engaging with the side of the post, substantially as set forth.
