Description
(No Model.) W. P. GRIFFITH.
FOLDING BED.
N0. 475,499. Patented May 24, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM P. GRIFFITH, OF ROME, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CARPENTER & DYETT, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,499, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed January 6, 1892. Serial No. 417,201. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. GRIFFITH, of Rome,in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebein g had to theaccompanyingdrawlugs, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in folding cots or beds.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows my bed in side elevation, partially in section. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of one end of the bedframe and one pair of supporting-legs in open position. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of one end of the bed, showing the leg partially folded. Fig. 4 shows the same in complete folded position.
Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals marked on the drawings in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the side rails, which,in connection with the cross-bars 2, rigidly secured at the ends thereof, form a rigid frame.
3 3 are the folding legs, attached or connected to the bed by connecting-links 4, pivoted to the side rails at 5 and to the legs at 6. The legs are provided with an inclined shoulder or ofiset 7, adapted to be engaged when in open position by inclined or beveled end S of the side rail.
The operation of the parts is so obvious that it 'is unnecessary to give particular description, excepting that it might be observed that in open position the beveled end 8 of the side rails engages on the inclined shoulder 7 of the leg and wedges thereon and supports the frame and binds the leg firmly thereto. Likewise the frame may be supported by the cross-bar 2, resting upon link 4, or the shoulder and link may each have a part in supporting the bed-frame independent of the links function of securing or holding the leg to the end of the side rail. It will also be observed that the portion of the leg above the pivotal point of the link abuts against the cross-bar 2, and a portion of the side rail abuts against the leg above the pivotal point of the link 4.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a folding cot or bed, of side rails and cross-bars secured on the top thereof at the ends and forming a frame, a folding leg, a link pivoted at one end to the leg and at the other to the side rail, and an inclined shoulder on the leg adapted to receive the beveled end of the side rail, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a folding cot or bed, of side rails 1, cross-bars 2, secured on the top and ends thereof, forming a frame, a folding leg provided with an inclined shoulder or offset, and a link pivoted to the side rail and to the leg adjacent to the shoulder and adapted to bind the leg against the end of the side rail and support the frame on the shoulder, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM P. GRIFFITH.
Witnesses:
