FOLDING BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,569, dated November 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMON W. LADD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention is designed to provide an improved means of connecting the folding legs of cots and other beds to the frames or side rails thereof, such means consisting in two inflexible connecting-links of unequal length, each pivoted both to the leg and to the side rail, so that the leg may swing freely from a vertical supporting position to a horizontal folded position.

In the drawings, Figures 1,2, and 3 are elevations of a plain bed or cot frame, showing part of the side rail with the leg connected thereto by the links, and seen in the folded, partially unfolded, and fullyspread positions. Fig. 4 is a partial View of a bed supported by such folding legs.

A is one of the side rails, and B one of the end rails, of the bed or cot frame.

0 is one of the folding supporting-legs connected to the rail A by the two rigid links D and E, each of which is pivoted to the leg by pivots F and to the side rail by pivots G. I prefer to duplicate the upper link, as shown in Fig. 4. The oblique braces H, which connect the legs transverselyin pairs, are shown in the same figure. The links are of unequal lengths and are not parallel; but if the distance between their pivots on the side rail added to the pivotal length of one of the links is equal to the distance between their pivots onthe leg plus the pivotal length of the other link the folding may be readily ac- The two inflexible connectinglinks permit to the legs a free swinging movement from the vertical supporting position for use into the horizontal or folded position parallel to and in contact with the side rails Without disconnecting either link or requiring any joint therein. This folding feature with two such links is a peculiarity of my invention, and I do not limit myself to the specitic arrangement of the legs and links represented in the drawings, as the points of attachment and length of links may be changed.

My improved beds may be suitably upholstered, as at J, Fig. 4.

I claim as my invention 1. In a folding bed, the frame and supporting folding legs therefor, in combination with two rigid links or braces of unequal pivotal lengths for each leg, each link pivoted to the side rail and to a leg, the shorter link being pivoted nearer to the end or corner of the frame and nearer to the upper end of the leg than the longer link, for the purpose set forth.

2. In a folding bed, the frame and supporting folding legs, in combination with two rigid links or braces of unequal length for each leg, connecting the leg and frame, the shorter link being pivoted to the leg nearer the up per end of the leg than the longer link, and said links being pivoted to the frame on opposite sides of the leg when the leg is in supporting position, substantially as set forth.
