Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LAMBERT, of Memphis, county of Shelby, and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Bed-Couch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction of folding couches adapted to be folded up for use as settees or unfolded for use as beds.

The features of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

In the drawings Figure l is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the left hand side thereof. Fig. 3 is a trans verse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is an end elevation when the device is unfolded to form a bed, showing the side of bed in elevation. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a section through part of the device on the line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a vertical section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 4.

Fig. 8 is a vertical section on the line 88' of Fig. 2.

The device consists principally of five members, the base 10, back 11, two ends 12 and seat 13. The base is a rectangular frame or boX adapted to contain bed clothing and mounted upon suitable casters.

The back member 11 is hinged at lt to the rear side of the base, see Fig. 3, so as to be in an upright or horizontal position. It is maintained in its upright position by means connecting it with the ends 12. In its turned down or horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 4', its outer end is supported by a head-board 15 that has suitable legs. At each side of the head-board there is an inwardly extending pin 16 that projects into a groove 17 in each side of the head member 11. This groove 17 extends longitudinally of the frame portion of the head member so that, when the device is opened out for a bed, it corresponds with the usual bed rail. The groove 17, when the parts are turned down as a bed, is turned upwardly at its outer end for a short distance to permit the head 15 to be turned to a vertical position and to form a recess or socket for the pin 15 for supporting the outer end of the back member when turned down, as

shown in Fig. 4. In folding up the headboard 15 is turned parallel with the main part 11 of the back portion and then slipped downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3, the pins 16 moving downwardly in the grooves 17 and thereby the head-board is maintained in a vertical position when the back is folded up, as shown in Fig. 3. This head-board furnishes a frame for the back when folded up.

The seat member 13, when the parts are unfolded for a bed, forms the foot of the bed. It is slidably mounted on the base so it can be drawn outwardly to form the foot of the bed. For that purpose the base has a pair of horizontal transversely disposed guide bars 18, see Fig. 5, and the side bar 13 has a pair of downwardly extending notched plates 19 that engage said guide bars and permit the seat member to be slipped outwardly or inwardly but it cannot escape from the base because of plates 19, see Fig. 5, projecting below the top of the front wall of the base. The outer portion of the seat, when forming a part of the bed, is supported by a foot board 20 which has legs and has inwardly projecting pins 16 entering grooves 17 in the seat member, the arrangement and operation of said parts being the same as in connection with the head of the bed, so that when folded up the foot board will be parallel with the seat member and will be slidable into place on the base, the top of the foot board when unfolded constituting the front rail or bar of the seat member when the device is folded up. The two ends are arranged alike and so as to fold down between the back and seat portions in forming the bed and thereby constituting the central portion of the bed. To that end a pair of vertical recesses 26 are made in the outer surfaces of the ends when in the folded position and within each of said recesses there is a pin 27 that projects through the slotted upper portion of the L-shaped bar 28 that at its lower end turns inwardly into a recess 29 in the base and is pivoted thereto by the pivot 30 near its inner end. The recesses 26 are deep enough to embed the bars 27.

For arranging the device as a bed each end piece is first elevated until the pins 27 reach the upper ends of the slots in the bars 28. Then the top of the end member is turned outwardly, the lower end of the end member at the same time moving inwardly,

the upper ends of the bars 28 forming the fulcrum. When the end member is in a substantially horizontal position on top of said bars 28 the end member and both bars are pushed inwardly over the base of the device, between the back and seat so as to form the central portion of the bed. After being thus turned down the end members are moved outwardly on the bars 28 until their outer edges are flush with the outer edges of the seat and back members 11 and 13. Then the parts will be as shown in Fig. 1-. The reverse movement of the parts will fold them up and for this the end members must be first turned up to position, then preferably the back and after that the seat are put in place.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A folding bed couch including a base, a back member hinged to the base so that when turned down it will form the head portion of the bed, a seat slidably mounted on the base so that when drawn out it will form the foot portion of the bed, end members pivotally mounted on the frame so that when turned downwardly they will form the central portion of the bed, a head board and a foot board, and means for mounting the head board and foot board in connection with the head and foot members respectively so that the head board and foot board will be parallel to the parts to which they are attached when the parts are folded up and vertical when the parts are folded down to form a bed, substantially as set forth.

2. A folding bed couch including a base, a back member hinged to the base so that when turned down it will form the head portion of the bed, a seat slidably mounted on the base so that when drawn out it will form the foot portion of the bed, end members pivotally mounted on the frame so that when turned downwardly they will form the central portion of the bed, a head board and foot board, a groove along each end of said back and seat members that are turned at a right angle at their upper ends, and pins in said head board and footboard that project into said grooves, substantially as set forth. 3. A folding bed couch including a base, back and side members arranged when unfolded to form the upper and lower ends of a bed, end members adapted to form the central portion of the bed, bars pivoted at their lower ends to the base, and a sliding connection between the upper portion of said bars and the end members whereby said bars will hold the end members in a vertical position and permit them to be revolved and moved to a horizontal position for forming a part of the bed.

4. A folding bed couch including a back and seat members arranged to form the upper and lower parts of the bed, end members provided with laterally extending pins, and L-shaped bars pivoted at their lower ends to the base and in their upper ends provided with slots through which said pins project.
