COMBINATION FURNITURE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAxiMiLiAM W. SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination furniture and more particularly to convertible easy chairs and beds.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character which may be conveniently converted from a bed into a chair and vice versa, whose mechanism is constructed to avoid the use of gears, rotating shafts and like parts, and which is essentially desirable in small apartments and other similar places where an additional bed is needed occasionally but where there is insufficient room for a bed of regulation size or a cumbersome davenort.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having hinged back and seat with means for locking them in operative chair forming position and means for simultaneously releasing the locking means whereby the seat may be moved to form a portion of the bed and the back moved automatically to form another portion of the bed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side view showing the device used as a chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same converted into a bed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with the parts in chairforming position. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken vertically through the device and looking in the direction of the arrow a in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the same line and looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional view showing a portion of the back locking mechanism. Fig. 7 is a front elevation showing the parts in bed forming position with the supporting legs shown in dotted lines in inoperative position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a main frame preferably rectangular in outline and supported upon legs 2 in the manner of the ordinary chair. Hinged to the front bar 3 of the frame is a seat frame 4 carrying a permanently secured cushion 5 of any suitable construction. The cushion is attached to the frame 4 in such manner as to leave a space 6 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Hinged to the rear bar 7 is a back frame 8 carrying a cushion or back rest 9 which forms a portion of a bed mattress, as will be hereinafter described. This cushion is connected to the frame in such manner as to leave a space 10 for the reception of the foot piece 11 which is connected to the frame by links 12 hinged upon a cross rod 13, as shown. This foot piece when thrown into vertical position to support the free outer end of the frame 8 is latched or locked in this position by means of a pivoted book 14 carried by the foot piece and arranged to engage over the end of the frame 8.
Secured to the inner edge of the frame 8 is a bar 15 to which is attached one end of a spring fabric 16, the opposite end of which is connected to a cross bar 17 secured upon the arms 18 pivoted to the inner side of the seat frame 4 and limited in their outward movement by the stops 19. The bar 17 is adapted to fold within the space 6 or to raise to the position shown in Fig. 4, where it will be on a level with the bar 15. The spring fabric has a suitable mattress 20 mounted thereon, which mattress is arranged to have its upper surface alined with the upper surface with the cushion 9 when the parts are in bed forming position.
\Vhen the back frame 8 is in horizontal bed-forming position and the seat frame 4 turned outwardly into bed forming position the spring fabric 16 will be under tension and it is, therefore, necessary that both of these frames be locked against movement.
The seat frame is locked in operative bed forming position by connecting the links 21 pivoted to said frame, to suitable studs on the front legs 2. The back frame has extending across the same a bar 22 which has journaled thereon an arcuate arm 23 having suitable notches 24 arranged to be engaged by a locking dog 25 pivoted upon the cross bar 7. This locking dog is normally drawn into operative notch engaging position by a spring 25 and is retracted or thrown to inoperative position by a cable 26 which operates over suitable pulleys 27 and has its opposite end connected to an operating lever 28 pivoted to the left hand side of the chair and projecting above the seat frame in convenient position for operation. The seat frame is also provided with a gravity lock 29 pivotally connected to the left-hand side adjacent the free end and arranged to engage over an extended finger 30 carried by the side of the main frame 1. hen in locking position the member 29 lies in the path of a plunger 31 carried upon the upper end of a lock lever 32 which is pivoted upon the side of the main frame 1 and has its lower end connected by means of a link 33 to the operating lever 28. It will, therefore, be seen that upon operation of the lever 28 the gravity lock 29 will be released from the finger 30 and the locking dog 25 released from the notches 24 in the arm 23; thus it will be seen that the parts are now ready to be moved into bed-forming position.
Extending across and journaled in the sides of the main frame 1 is a shaft 34 having a rock lever 35 secured thereto. This rock lever is connected by means of peculiarly shaped links 36 and 37 to the seat frame 4 and to the back frame 8, respectively, so that when the seat frame is raised and thrown outwardly the back frame will be automatically lowered into bed-forming position. When the seat frame is raised and thrown inwardly the mattress upon the springs 16 and the springs themselves will befolded so as to lie within the space 6 and within the space above the shaft 34 and the back frame will be automatically raised to vertical position. Both the seat frame and the back frame will also be automatically looked as the gravity catch 29 will drop over the finger 30 and the dog 25 will drop into each notch upon the arm 23, the notches being formed of any suitable construction to facilitate the rearward movement of the dog when so desired. It will be noted that the provision of the arched-shaped arm 23 with the notches arranged intermediate thereof allows the back frame to be adjusted to any desired angle.
Pivoted to the outer or free end of the seat frame 4 are a pair of legs 38 joined together adjacent their lower terminals by the links 39, 40 and 41. The first and the latter of these links are pivoted to the legs and have their inner terminals pivoted to the link 40 which carries a handle 42 for throwing the legs to operative frame supporting position. The link 40 is notched to receive stop fingers 43 formed on the links 39 and 41, as shown, and the seat frame 4 is provided with stops 44 arranged to limit the folding movement of the legs as will be seen from an inspection of the end view where the folded position of these parts is indicated in dotted lines.
It will be noticed that when the seat frame is raised to be thrown outwardly that the handle 42 is used for this purpose. Raising the seat frame by grabbing the handle automatically throws the legs to operative position and suitable cleats are connected to the free end of the seat frame for limiting their lateral movement.
In converting the chair into a bed the lever 28 is moved to the rear as far as it will go which releases the gravity catch and the locking dog and thereby frees the seat and back frame. The handle 42 is then grasped and the seat frame brought to a vertical position after which the lever is released and allowed to return to its former position. The seat frame is then carried downwardly to a horizontal position which automatically throws the back frame to horizontal position without the operator touching it. The back frame is automatically locked in horizontal position and the seat frame is then locked in horizontal position by engaging the links with the studs 0n the legs. In raising the seat frame to vertical position the legs 38 are thrown to operative position and held in this position by the locking links 39, 40 and 41.
To return the bed to normal position the legs 38 are first folded, the links released from the studs On the legs and the lever operated to release the dog 25 from the arm 23. The seat frame is then moved to vertical and the lever released. It is then moved to horizontal position until the gravity catch engages the finger 30. All of the parts will then be locked in chair-forming position and the mattress and springs concealed beneath the seat frame.
If desired, a suitable sliding foot rest may be employed and the back frame and its associated parts may be so constructed that it may be placed at any angle of inclination. It is, of course, understood that when the device is in chair-forming position that the foot Diece 11 is folded in the space 10 beneath the cushion 9.
WVhat is claimed is:
1. In a combined chair and bed, a main frame, seat and back frames hingedly connected thereto and adapted to move outwardly away from the main frame into horizontal position, an operating lever pivot ally mounted on said frame, a rocking lever pivotally mounted on said frame, and having one end thereof connected to said operating lever thereof, the opposite end being provided with a plunger, a finger formed on said main frame adjacent to said plunger, a gravity catch pivotally mounted upon the free end of said seat frame and adapted to engage said finger, a dog pivotally mounted on the rearward end of said main frame, a flexible element connecting said operating lever with said dog, an arm connected to the inner ends of said back frame and extending into said main frame, said dog adapted to engage said arm, said operating lever adapted to release said engagement with the arm and to actuate said plunger to move the gravity catch from the finger, and means for supporting said seat and back frames in a horizontal position.
2.
