EDWIN L. WEINMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-TENTH TO JAMES J.
MGKENNA AND SOL W. HARRIS,
BOTH OF, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS COMBINATION FOLDING BED AND DAVENPORT Application filed August 16, 1923, Seria1 No. 657,668. Renewed. March 19, 1932.
scribed, which shall be perfectly concealed when not in use, easy in operation, and readily convertedinto either position and with a mnnmum of effort.
A still further object of the invention isthe combination of a folding bed with a davenport, wherein ample space is provided for a mattress, bedding and pillowswithin the folding bed, which will be automatically brought up into position, ready for use when the davenport is opened to form a bed. A still further important object of the invntion is the provision of a combined davenport and folding bed, which is very simply and strongly constructed, and which is easier to operate and cheaper to than most similar devices known in the market.
Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent fromthe disclosures in the accompanying drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is shown in the drawings hereinafter more fully described.
Fig. I is an inner vertical side section with the device in its closed position when forming a davenport.
Fig. Ia is a separate view of the seat-rotating-mechanism.
Fig. II is a detailed sectional view of the left hand end of the davenport in its closed position.
Fig. Hat is a separate view of the plates connecting side ends and front board.
Fig. III is the rear view of the other end of the device, when in aclosed position.
Fig.IIIa shows the rear of the side end transversely connected. 7
Fig. IV is a vertical longitudinal side section of the device in'its open position when of its principal objects the combina-' manufacture forming a bed and showing front end bed section folded over in dotted lines.
Fig. V is a horizontal view of asection of the bed davenport in open position when extended, showing the bed spring fabric attached with helical springs to the bed'frame sections with seat and back underneathz.
The reference numeralIindicates the frame of the davenport having side end sections 1 and connecting boards 2 and 3 attached there to in back and in front. I
A foldable bed frame made of angle iron; consisting of transversely connected rectan gularlyshaped front and rear end sections 4-and 6 and intermediate section 5 pivoted to one another at points 7 and 8, is swingingly supported by means of supporting arms 9 at point 10, provided with studs 11 which are inserted in slots 12 of plates 13 which are connected to the side end members 1 of the I davenport frame and the front end section 4 is supported by means of legs 14, pivoted at point 15, the legs being rigidly connected by a cross bar 16 at point 17 and are provided with extensions 18 resting upon the floor when in open position and adapted to fold by manual operation upon the bed frame sec: tion 4 when the latter is folded-upon the intermediate bed frame section 5 and swung rearward into a vertical position while. con verted into a davenport, as shown in Figures I, II, III and IV. To the front bed section 4 is also pivoted a link 19at point 20which is provided with a slot and notch 21 for the purpose of locking the leg 14 in a rectangular position when the bedframe is being opened in engaging astud 22 of leg 14, releasing the same when the front bed section 4 is folded upward upon intermediate bed section 5 and folding parallel thereto.
At the free end of the link 19 is pivoted a link 23 to which is pivotally' connected by means of plate 24 an upholstered davenport back 25 at its upper end and at its lower end the back member 25 is suspended by linkages 26 at point 27 from the intermediate bed frame section 5 and resting against the same and concealing it when in folded position.-
The front end bed section 4 is pivoted to IOU intermediate bed section at point 7 folding upon the same at a sharp angle and is supported in that position by means of slotted link 28 which engages a stud 29 of intermediate section 5 at point 30 and is swingingly connected to front bed-section 4 at point 31 and actuated by the folding and unfolding of the latter.
To intermediate bed section 5 is pivoted a link 32 at point 33 provided with a slot and notch 34 sliding upon a stud 35 attached to davenport side end section 1 at point 36 guid ing and limiting the forward and backward swinging of bed frame sections 4, 5 and 6, and by means of connecting link 37 pivoted to link 32 at point 38 on one end and on the other to inner bed section 6 at point 39 the latter is supported horizontally while in opened or closed position and during its transitory movement from one to the other.
A stud 40 extending outwardly at pivot 8 which connects intermediate bed section 5 with the inner end bed section 6, is inserted in loop 41 of a helical extension spring 42 which is hooked by loop 43 to a stud 44 which is attached to davenport side end section 1 and by means of the extension and contraction of this spring 42 the weight of the folding bed and upholstered back suspended therefrom is counterbalanced in its opening and closing operation.
To the side end section 1 is rigidly attached a set of plates 45 and 46 providing a slotted guide way, in which a roller 47 slides and rotates, this roller being connected to a plate 48 which is rigidly screwed on to a davenport seat 49 on the side thereof and to which is also pivoted a link 50 at point 51 swinging with its other end on the upper part of slotted guide plates 45 and 46 at point 52, this link 50 controlling and limiting the seat 49 in its rotary motion while reversing the same.
On the side of seat 49 is rigidly attached a plate 53, curved and notched, which when the seat is in its normal position supports the same by sliding upon and resting upon a roller 54, connected to an angular plate 55, which is screwed on to davenport side end section 1 near its front and has slotted openings 56, into which plates with studs 57 fit, these plates being screwed onto front board 3 on each end thereof, connecting it detachably to side end sections 1.
A bed spring fabric 58 is attached by means of helical springs to the folding bed sections as shown in Figure V and carries a mattress, bedding and pillows in horizontal position when open and stores the same away i when closed.
.' side of the structure and therefore should be considered in duplicate.
The operation 0/ the article described is as follows When the folding bed is closed and the back and seat members 25 and 49 are in their normal position while in use as a davenport and it is desired to change the same into an open bed, the fingers are inserted between the back and seat and the seat pulled upward and forward into an approximate vertical position and the upholstered back with the folding bed sections 4 and 5 attached thereto swung forward and downward into a horizontal position. The front end section 4 of the folding bed frame is then swung outward and the legs 14 opened and brought into a vertical position, either by force of gravity or by manual operation, beneath the reversed front end bed section 4 supporting same. The swinging forward of the bed frame brings also the innerend bed section 6 at the rear end of the bed into an upward position by means of automatic operation of links 32 and 37.
After the bed sections 4, 5 and 6 are brought in horizontal alignment, forming a continuous bed frame with the bed spring fabric attached thereto as shown on Fig. V and supporting the mattress, beddingand pillows carried upon and within the folding bed frame, the bed is ready for use and the seat and back are both suspended underneath thereof in a reversed position. The entire conversion from a closed davenport to an open bed is performed easily and quickly by a practically continuous motion of swinging the seat upward with one hand and the back and bed forward and outward with the other hand.
In closing the folding bed to convert it again into a davenport, the front bed section 4 is folded over the intermediate bed frame section 5 at a sharp angle thereto and supported in that position by slotted link 28 and the legs 14 are folded upon front bedscction 4 parallel thereto, thereby releasing automatically the locking of the legs by links 19 which also support and suspend the upholstered back 25 and by lifting the back with bed sections 4 and 5 upward and. swinging them rearward the lower end of the intermediate bed section 5 presses against the inverted front end of the seat in the rear of the davenport frame and forces thereby the seat 49 around the roller 47 to rotate in the slotted guide way provided by plates 45 and 46, the seat being guided and limited in its rotary movement by links 50, until the seat is again in its normal horizontal position with the upholstering on top.
This conversion from bed into davenport also requires practically only one continuous operation consisting of the closing of front end bed section 4 and the swinging backward of the folded bed frame by merely pushing the back of the davenport upward and backward from a'horizontalto an upright position.
These simple operations of opening and closing the device and thereby converting the same from davenport into bed and vice versa require very little effort and are very easily accomplished, as the Weight is evenly distributed and the entire construction well balanced in its different operative positions.
