From'the foregoing it will be observed that the connectionof the seat with the sectional mattress is through the medium of the rear section only of that mattress while the connection'of the sectional mattress itself to the framework is likewisethrough the medium of the rear section only, so that in order to fold and unfold the mattress sections after they have been shifted into the position shownin Fig.

This movement of the seat also automatically unfolds the legs 8 into position to support the seat upon the floor.

  • the present improvement therefore does away with, not only a fourth section, but many of the linkage connections and springs heretofore used in folding beds, and I believe that I am the first to provide a folding bed of the simplified form shown without the usual complicated mechanism and whichv can be readily and easily manipulated. 7 It will also be observed that in addition the weight of the three sections when in their folded position as shown in Fig. 3, is back of the pivotal point of the seat and consequently this enables the seat to be turned over easily and all three sections to be raised or lowered, this being one of the important features of improvement in the present case.

CCNVERTIBLE DAVENPGRT BED.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
' Application filed October 36, 1318. Serial No. 260,336.
T '0 (ZZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JosnrI-i LUrrINo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Convertible Davenport Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in convertible davenports, the object of the invention being to provide an improved convertible bed consisting of sectional spring mattress comprising three bed sections, an inner, an outer and amiddle section, one forming the head and another the foot thereof and which sectional spring mattress can be readily stowed away in the base or box of the davenport, and wl'lich davenport is provided with a shiftable seatso connected therewith and with the sectionalspring mattress that on the shifting of the seat all of the sections will be simultaneously raised or lowered relatively to the clavenport base andwhen raised the sections can be readily opened lengthwise to form a full length bed having its longer axis transverse to and greater than its width.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a three section spring mattress of the character described so connected with the frame work of the davenport through the medium of the shiftable seat and. the.
rear of the shiftable inner section only that mucn simplified and more easily operated article of this kind is obtained whereby the structure can be readily and easily operated b y a woman. I
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved convertible bed of the character specified having sointerconnected therewith an automatically operated head or foot railfsupporting legs for one section and a shiftable seat having connected therewith a shiftable front side of the da-venport whereby these parts are all automatically operated on the opening closing of the sectional spring mattress by the simple movement of raising and opening the sections or vice versa.
Another object is the provision of an improved convertible bed of the character described, of which the inner shiftable spring mattress section is itself provided with a shiftable portion carrying a part of the spring mattress, whereby when the bed is extended this shiftable portion may be thrown over to permit access to the box of the davenport for the purpose of cleaning toe same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved convertible bed of the character specified ha ing its only direct connection with the frame-work of the davenport through the medium of the rear section at the rear thereof thereby to do away with the complicated system of levers or links and connections usually used in folding bed structures, the presentimprovement being in part an improvement upon my pending application No. 184,454, filed August 4, 191.7.
In that application the seat had to be shifted upwardly independently of the shiftable mattress sections and the shiftable mattress sections were connected with the framework ot the da-venport by a pair of linkage connections, one at the rear of the inner section and the other adjacent to the forward side thereof. In the present improvement, however, I have entirely. done away with the shifting of the seat independently of the sectional mattressand have also done away with any direct linkage connection adjacent to the forward side of the rear section, such linkage connection as is used be ing utilized primarily for the shifting of the seat which is so located that the weight thereof materially assists in the easy manipulation of the sectional mattress. More over the present organizationenables the structure to be easily operated by a woman, and this without the addition of springs thereto to facilitate such operation, while at the same time very much simplifying and reducing the weight of the shift'able parts which make the usual. folding bed so ditficult of handling by a woman.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Fig.1 illustrates the present improvementapplied to ad venport, the view being partly in section and broken away to illustrate-the shiftable spring mattress sections in their open positions to form a full length bed; Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the bed sections in their raised positionin readiness to be opened; Fig. 3 is a similar view'i'llustratthe bed sections in their closed position within the base or box of the da-venport; and Fig. t is a view similar to Fig. l illustrating the inner section itself provided with a shiftable portion adapted to be overturned to permit the cleaning of the davenport boX or base.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the present improvement, the box 2 forms the base of the davenport which may comprise the back 3 having the upper half thereof forming an upholstered back section as at 5, and a pair of arms 4., one at each end, the foregoing forming the framework for supporting the shiftable seat and the shiftable sectional spring mattress. The box is provided at its forward side with a hinged closure or board 6 automatically operated in the manner herein after described and this shiftable board completely closes the front of the box when the seat is in its proper normal position. To the upper edge of this board 6 the rear underside of the seat is secured, so that the manipulation of the seat shifts this board. The seat 7 may be of the usual tufted or stuffed variety and is provided between its rear and front sides at each end with a. pivoted leg 8 and each of these pivoted. legs is linked by a lever 9 to the frame-work. whereby when the seat is thrown down these legs will be automatically shifted into position to support the seat and automatically folded when the seat is thrown back into its normal position.
The legs in the present instance are located nearer the front side of the seat than the rear side thereof and the levers 9 are pivotally connected to the frame work adjacentto the front thereof and in such position that they will pass throughthe opening in the front side formed by the shiftable board 6.
The bed proper comprises three sections, an outer or front section A which mayconstitute the head section if desired, an inner or rear section B which may constitute the foot section if preferred and the middle or intermediate section C to which the outer and inner sections are pivotally connected or hinged. The middle or intermediate section is provided with a suitably formed brace or bar 10 extending from end to end thereof and in position to prevent the sections from collapsing in use. These threeshiftable sections are provided with a suitable spring fabric or mattress 11 capable of being folded with the framework forming the shiftable mattress sections. This framework consists of suitable side bars hinged in the manner hereinbefore described, the inner and outer sections being provided at their outer sides or ends with suitable cross-wise extending bars. In the present instance, the middle section is smaller than the inner or outer sections. The inner section B is connected at each end thereof. adjacent to its forwardside with the seat by means of an upright or standard 12 rigidly secured to the seat and having a pin 13 working in a slot let carried by a bracket 15 secured to a side bar of the section B, whereby on the manipulation of. the seat, the shiftable mattress sections will be raised or lowered into the davenport box in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the slot 14 affording sufficient play to permit the seat to be thrown over from its normal position to a position under the shiftable sections or vice versa. The rear side of the inner section B is connected by a pivoted link or hanger 16 with the framewor: at eachend of this rear section and these two links engage stops 1'? carried by the section B when the sections are extended. The link 16 is so located that when the folding mattress sections are open the link 16 will be in a horizontal position with its pivot points in'alignment. This link forms the only direct connection between the shiftable sections and the davenport frame-work and constitutes the only medium by means ofwhich the shiftable sections are directly connected with the fra.me-work,'and it will be observed that these two links 16 are straight links without any bends or arms thereon. 2, it is not necessary to also handle the very considerable weight of the heavy stuffed seat. Pivotally secured to the outer section A at each end thereof is a shiftable leg 20 projecting slightly above the outer section and linked at its upper end by a bar 21 to the middle section to which this bar is pivotally secured, and pivotally secured tothe outer end of the head section is a head or foot rest 22 according to which end of the bed-the occupant desires to use as the head or foot. This rest is pivotally connected at each end by a link 23 with the leg 20 in such a manner thatwhen the bed is folded or opened the rest will be automatically folded down or opened up in readiness for use.
In manipulating this improved converatible bed to open the same, the seat is first swung forward or outward which simultaneously shifts thefboard 6 so as to open the front side of the davenport and also simultaneously shifts the three section mattress upward and forward into the position shown in Fig. 2. This movement of the seat also automatically unfolds the legs 8 into position to support the seat upon the floor.
Thereupon by graspingthe outer section A, 13
the folding mattress sections can be opened which operation simultaneously unfolds the leg 20 and the rest 22- to'carry them into the position shown in Fig. 1. A reverse of these movements in sequence completely closes the sectional bed and carries it into the position shown in Fig. 3 in which position the outer and inner sections A and B are located one above the other in parallelism, with the middle section extending upright or transversely I thereto. lVhen the sections are opened they form a full length bed, the long axis of which is transverse to the long axis of each of the sections or of the davenport and when closed the long axis of the folded sections of the davenport is transverse to the width of the davenport.
The present improvement, therefore does away with, not only a fourth section, but many of the linkage connections and springs heretofore used in folding beds, and I believe that I am the first to provide a folding bed of the simplified form shown without the usual complicated mechanism and whichv can be readily and easily manipulated. 7 It will also be observed that in addition the weight of the three sections when in their folded position as shown in Fig. 3, is back of the pivotal point of the seat and consequently this enables the seat to be turned over easily and all three sections to be raised or lowered, this being one of the important features of improvement in the present case.
It will be understood that the various details may be more or less changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the present improvement.
It will furthermore be observed that the links 16 suspend the folded sections of the bed from the davenport, that is to say, these links operate as hangers in that they are pivotally connected to the framework of the davenport'above the section B, and also the section A, when these sections arefolded, so that the folded sections are hung from the davenport by these hangers in consequence of which the sections can be more readily raised and carried forward from under the pivotal points of the hangers with the davenport without interfering with the bottom. of the upholstered back of the davenport.
In other words, if the links extended downward from the section B instead of upward therefrom, it would not be practicable to use a single link and the construction would have to be entirely changed. But by using a single. link and hanging the folded sections therefrom they can be readily raised and moved forward, as shown in Fig. 2 without the use of a spring, as the folded sections are practically balanced during the operation.
The structure shown in Fig. t is similar to that shown in l, 2 and 3, except that the inner section B is itself provided with a. pivoted or hinged shiftable portion 30, to which the spring mattress fabric. is connected instead of being connected all the way along to the inner section B. Normally when the bed is extended or when folded, this shiftable portion 30 lies within the side and end rails of the section B, so that when the bed is opened or folded, the section B and the shiftable portion 30 move together and operate to all intent and purposes as an integral structure. lVhen however, the bed is extended and it is desired to clean the clavenport box or base from the dust and dirt which usually accumulate in parts of this kind, all that is necessary is to turn or throw over the shiftable portion 30, which therefore permits access to the box or base of the davenport. In. the present imp-rovement, this shiftable portion is shown as a U-shaped angle frame carrying a portion of the spring mattress, which would otherwise be connected to the frame ofthe inner section B. In Fig. 4 this shiftable portion is shown pivotally connected to the side bars of the inner section-B at 32, and in Fig. 4: this shiftable portion is partly thrown over, it being understood that it could be thrown over practically all the way if de sired to permit access to the base or box of the davenport. This is a very important feature of the present improvement, and I believe that I am the first to provide a convertible bed of the character described having means such as that shown for facilitating access to and thereby the cleaning ofthe box or davenport, which is usually of closed form, and therefore inaccessible in any convenientpractical manner. s. It will be observed that when the shiftable portion 30 is used, that the spring: mattress is connected to the inner section B, for a part of the width of such inner section, the balance of such spring mattress being connected to the'shiftable portion 30 instead of all along the width of such inner section as in Fig. l.-
In the present improvement the backvor back section'of the frame-work comprising the usual stuffed or upholstered back is stationary or fixed while the rear or inner bed section is connected to the framework below this back section. Thus I am able to utilize the rigid back section to securely brace the It will be observed that when the sections.
are folded the inner section as well as the top section is suspended below'the upholstered back and to the rear of the front thereof but by providing the movable front board 6 automatically shifted with the sec-' tions the sections can be raised and shifted forward in the manner shown in Fig. 2 from below the back without requiring this heavy upholstered back to be a movable one.
In other words, without the movable front board it would not be possible to house the three sections below a fixed back and still permit them to be shifted upward and forward.
It will also be observed that in the pres widening the framework, since there is norotary seat which. has to be revolved in the framework base in order to open and close the sections, and in consequence when the sections are unfolded it will be observed that the front or outer section has practicallyits full width beyond the front edge oft-he seat when it is reversed. v
