Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is the specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sofa beds and the object of the invention is to devise a bed of this class which is com pact, in which the foot portion of the bed lies within the frame back of the lounge behindthe upholstered back thereof and yet separated therefrom, in which the bed may be unfolded or refolded by a sin le operation with a minimum amount of e ort whereby the lounge back is carried from a position in front of the folded foot portion to a position beneath the unfolded center portion of the bed or the seat portion of the lounge and at the same time so forming the bed that the mattress is independently removable therefrom and separated from the uphol-' stered seat and'upholstered back and it consists essentially of a lounge frame, a bed frameswung within the lounge frame and divided into sections swingably connected together, a seat portion for the lounge secured to the back of the center bed section, a supporting leg for the outer end of such center bed section, -a bracket extending inwardly therefrom, a lounge back swung in proximity to its lower edge upon the bracket, a substantially right angular lever swung on the sides of the lounge frame in proximity to the end of the short arm' and connected to the end of the long arm in proximity to the opposite or upper edge of the lounge back, a resilient connection between the extreme end of the short arm of the lever and the loun e frame whereby the weight of'the bed is li tedduring the upward throw and supported during the downward throw as it is unfolded or refolded as hereinafter more particularly explained by the following specification.

I merely describe this constructlon in order to make the operation of my device clear but do not lay claim to it as new as it is the common construction usually employed in this class of bed.

This movement is aided by the tension of' the spring 46 drawing upon the lower end of the slide bar 43- exerting. an upward pressure on the upwardly movlng portion of the bed. Simultaneously with this upward movement of the foot portion of the bed the upper edge of the back portion of the lounge 1s carried in a circular path by the long arm of the lever 29- around its center of swing formed at 28 thereby carrying it from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 against the upholstered seat portion 20 of the lounge. Such back porthis operation takes place, the tension of the spring shown in the position in Fig. 4

' tending to counterbalance the weight of the foot portion of the bed as it is removed to the highest position and as it drops to the closed position against the back board 4 of the'lounge frame the roller 47 engages the slide bar 43 the weight then being carried by the spring 46.

From this descriptionit will be seen that I have devised a sofa bed in which a minimum amount of exertion is necessary to open the bed to an unfolded position or refold it to a closed position and at the same time providing a bed in which the mattress is entirely separate from the upholstered portions of the lounge and, therefore, independently removable therefrom and in which the back of the lounge seat is carried with the bed from its normal position, when forming the back of the lounge, to a position beneath the seat portion of the lounge when the bed is in its unfolded position.

What I claim as my invention is.

1. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, of a folding bed pivotally mounted between the side portions of the lounge frame and comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected together, one portion disposed normally in a vertical osition another in a horizontal position an another portion folded thereunder, a lounge seat secured to the upper side of the horizontal portion of the bed frame, legs for supporting the outer end of such horizontal portion when in the unfolded position, a bracket extendin. inwardly from each of the supporting egs, a lounge back pivotally attached to such brackets in proximity to its lower edge, and means for swinging the upper portion of such back in a circular path as the bed isunfolded to carry such back portion beneath the seat portion of the lounge.

2. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, of a folding bed pivotally mounted between the side portions of the lounge 'frame and comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected together, one

portion disposed normally in a vertical position another in a horizontal position and another portion folded thereunder, a lounge seat secured to the upper side of the hori-' zontal portion of the bed frame, legs for supporting the outer end of such horizontal portion when in the unfolded position, a

bracket extending inwardly frgm each of the supporting legs, a lounge back pivotally attached to such brackets in proximity to its lower edge, means for swinging the upper portion of such back in a circular path as the bed is unfolded to carry such back portion beneath the seat portion of the lounge, and means connected to said means for counterbalancing the weight of the bed as it passes from the folded to the unfolded position.

3. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, of a folding bed pivotally mounted between the side portions of the lounge frame and comprising a plurality of sections hingedly' connected together, one portion disposed normally in a vertical position another in a horizontal position and another portion folded thereunder, a lounge seat secured to the upper side of the horizontal portion of the bed frame, legs for supporting the outer end of such horizontal portion when in the unfolded position, a bracket extending inwardly from each of the supporting legs, a lounge back pivotally attached to such brackets in proximity to its lower edge, means for swinging the upper portion of such back in a circular path as the bed is unfolded to carry such back portion beneath the seat portion of the lounge, said means comprising an elbow lever having one arm pivotally supported intermedi ately of its length to the lounge frame and the other arm 'pivotally connected to the lounge back in proximity to its upper edge, and a tension spring connecting the extreme end of the pivotally supported arm to the lounge frame. 7 v

4. In a sofa bed, the combination with a stationary frame, of a foldable bed bottom pivotally connected to said frame and comprising a series of sections connected to gether, a sofa back movably carried by the bed bottom, a substantially L-shaped lever having its normally horizontal arm pivot: ally mounted in the frame intermediate of its length and having its vertical arm. pivoted to said back, and counter-balancing means connected to the end of the horizontal arm.

5. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, of a folding bed swung between the sides of the lounge frame and comprising a series of sections hingedly connected together, an elbow lever having its normally horizontal arm pivoted to the frame intermediately of its length and its vertical arm supporting the seat, and countel-balancing means connected to the outer end of the normally horizontal arm.

6. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, of a bed frame and a seat section comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected together and a lounge back, and means for supporting and carry- 3 ing such back to automatically pass from its normal position to a position beneath the unfolded seat section and approximately parallel thereto during the unfolding operation.

7. In a sofa bed, the combination with the lounge frame, lounge back and lounge seat section, of a bed frame comprising a plurality of sections hingedly connected to gether, said lounge seat section being invertibly carried by one of said sections, and

means operated by the unfolding of the bed to swing the lounge back against the seat section as the seat section is inverted by the simultaneous operation of unfolding the bed whereby the lounge back is carried into a position beneath and against the lower face of the seat sectiouwhen in the unfolded position.
