agence.
ToA-,aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEoRGE A1 SMITH, al citizen of the United States, residing at the citygiand county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Davenport-Beds, of which thefollowing is a specification.,
This invention relates to davenport beds andfhas for its object to simplify and iinprove the construction and operation ot such devices with a .view to obtain an easily operable davenportbed, of standard size, both as to the bed and settee portions, and whe-rein thebed clothing will be folded in such a wayas. to prevent crushing thereof or iniuryg to the mattress. ydnzfcarrying out this object, I employ a davenport or settee frame, having a, 'hinged seatand'back; a bed frame in three sections hinged together, the head and intermediate sections being adapted to toldintf`-v parallel, vertical positions, back to ,back behind the back rest ot the davenport and the footsectionbeing toldable into position beneath the Seat,'topside up, and novel and improved connections Jfor thc parts, whereby to sini4 -plify the construction and facilitate the readyoperation ot the device.
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description, and`illustratedin the accompanying draw- `ingsdn which- Figure i shows a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of the device embodying my invention, with parts in ext-ended position.
FigjQ shows a similar view with the parts in folded position. y
Fig. 3 shows a front elevation'ot' the device shown in Fig.' 2. i Fig. et shows a. front elevation ot the device shown in Fig. 1.
-f-Figs. 5 and 6 show details of the supporting member cairied between the head andl intermediate sections of the bed.
In the dra-wings, I have shown a` davenport or settee :ti-amel() of popularfsize and,
comprising side pices 'l1 and back portion l2 with intermediate connections. ioned seat 18 is hinged at its forward end to the side pieces by means 'of pivot links '14, and carries upwardly and rearwardly extending side Lpieces 15 which by engagement with lugs 16 on the rear trarne section, serve to support one end of the se'at in folded posi- V Specification 4ofpLettei's Patent.

tion. The side pieces 15 also carry rigid legs 17 for engagement with the floor, whereby to support thcs'eat when the latter is eX I tended and inverted. A toot board l()a on the davenport traine stays the links 14 when the seat is in extended position. A back-rest 1,8 ot' any "suitable construction is hinged in any Patent-ea nee. io, isis.,
desired manner to the. top ot' the traine section 1'2 and swings from a downwardly eX- tending position, where it coperates with the seat to close the davenport, into any upstanding position'- where it exposes the back" of the davenport.
The bcdfrarne comprises lthree"sectic'ii'is,A
namely, ahead section l9, an intermediate section 2O and a toet section21,eacli coniprising Aalrigid trarne carrying` a 'portion of apvii'e mattress 22..
The lieadand intermediate l'sections are hinged together toltoldY back to back ina vertical position and the vfootand intermediate sections are hinged together to fold substantially at right angles, "as shownin vFija,VV The head section is supu ported at itsd'oriiard end by rigid legs Q3 pivotally connected to brackets carried i `on the rear traine section l2. Pi'voted nearv the joint between the head and intermediate sections are pendant legsll, guided and held in vertical position by ineans of pins Q6 on` the adjacent sections. l/Vhenthe sections are folded, these legsextend downwardly between tlie two sections, 4and when extended, the legs occupy a right-angular position and rest upon supporting brackets oi' shelves 2T secui'edto the side portions 11- of thetdaveni port traine. The toot section and the adjacent end ot theV intermediate section, ywhen in extended position, rest upon the side p ieces 15 ot' the inverted seat and are siidable thereon by reason ot' connections hereinafter described. Between the foot section and the side pieces 15, l provide bent linkst'pivotally connected to the said toot section, in ternnediate the ends thereof, and having pintles 28, working in upwardly and rearwardly inc-lined slots or tracks v29, on the said side bars. Wfhen 1the seatds in'` folded position, thelinks 28 are at the lower and forward end of theslots and serve .to support the toot section, as Shownin Fig. 2. In moving the parts into extended position, the -links 28 remain at the saine end of the slot until theJ sea-t comes to rest. This places the ico 'Lit
lines in Fig. 1, where the said sections occupy a zig-zag arrangement. 'l`hereafter, by p ullineon handles 230 attached to the foot; Section, the linksl slide forwardly in the slots to the opposite ends thereot', at the. saine time swinging about their pivotal connections with the t'oot section and slots. to permit the, bed sections to occupy positions in alineinent with each other, the pendant legs 25 meanwhile comimgr to rest upon the supports 2T. To close or fold the bed, the operator lifts up the outer end of the foot section, which through a leverage afforded by the links 2H, transmits a downward movement to the adjacent end of the intermediate section, both otl said sections being` spaced above the side pieces l5 of the scat by means of blocks tween the head and intermediate sections is broken, and thereafter by pushing forwardly, the parts fold in the reverse order of unfolding.
'l`lie device shown and operates with great ease and rapidity. A strap or hand hold 31 is preferablyy provided on the rear edge of the seat. and this is exposed whentlie back is swung upwardly, so that the operator. b v pulling on the strap, can easily overtlirn the seat. lt will be noted that there is a ininimtim of weight imposed upon the seat when turning the same. none ot' the bed sections or bed clothingr turning with the seat. .'lhe foot section is liever in'- verted but retains at all times its position topside up. rl`l1e turning movement of the seat merel)Y raises the foot section and draws it forwardly. and inasniuchasa longleverage is all'orded for this operation, it is evident that a minimum ot' ett'ort is required to unt'old the bed. A\fter the seat comes to rest, the movement of the bed sections into alineuieiil is almost automatic. since. the position ot' the head and intermediate sections causes :i thrustin a direction tion forwardlyY and pivotal movement. ot' connections with the described herein,
aline the whole.
links 14. and at the end of tltl" the said links strike the edge 0f the seat and thereafter the movementl is about. the connections between the liiiks and the stationary t'ranie. 'lhis latter movement thrustsI the seat forwardlv and allows it to drop to a lower plane. lhe pendant legs 25 support the bed interiiiediately. and the 2guides 2o insiii'e the engagement ot' the said legs with thc supports 2T and at the same time permit folding ot' the legs with respect to the adjacent'sections. The head and interincdiate sections fold back to back and therefore the bedding is not crushed as in other constructions. Preferably l use a mattress 2&2 Awith a joint or hinge in line between the hcad and intermediate sect ions and thereby l am enabled to prevent severe bending oF the mattress. B v having two vertical sel:-
'l`hereby the hinge joint be- Apintles l-t on the standards to move the foot se@` The the seat is about the tions in folded position, less height is required for the back frame 12, which receives them. Other constructions employing a single vertical member at: the back, find it; necessary to extend the frame to a height greater than popular size and design will permit.
The present construction lends itself to ready and quick assembling. It will be noted that there are but two permanent connections between the bed frame and the davenport trame, namely. the links 2S in the slots 29 and the standards 23 on the brackets 2l. ,\ccordingl v, I am enabled to provide a kiiock-dowii construction by simply providing the slots 2t) with gateways 33 in the upper edges to permit removal of the pintles 2S, and employingflattened or rectangular 23 and recesses 35 in the brackets 24 to receivesaid pintles, said recesses being provided with enlargements at their inner ends to permit turning of the pintles therein. Only when the head section is moved to extended position, will the piiitles 3l pass through the said recesses, the connections being at all other times locked. lt will also be noted t iat the steel or metal work herein. which includes the bed frame -and operative connections theret'or. are few and easily assembled, and since it is the custom in this art for one manufacturer to supply the metal parts to another manufacturer, who does the woodwork and assembling, it, is obvious that the simplicity of attachment ot' the metal parts to the woodwork is an important consideration.
lVhile I have shown herein and described but one forni ot' in v invention, it will be understood nevertheless, that the saine is susceptible ot' modification. and therefore many changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts maybe employed, without departing from the spirit thereof. as disclosed in the appended claims.
