COMBINATION COZY-CORNER SEAT AND BED.

My invention has for its especial object to provide a convertible cozy-corner Seat and bed of simple construction which may be easily manipulated and which is efficient for the purposes had in view.

To such ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several Views.

Figure 1 is a view in front elevation with some parts broken away, showing the device arranged to form a cozy-corner seat. Fig. 2 is a plan view with some parts broken away, showing by full lines the device adjusted as in Fig. 1 and showing by dotted lines the device adjusted as a bed. Fig. 3 is atransverse vertical section taken on the line zra of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4is a view in front elevation, showing the device adjusted for use as a bed.

The seat-body, as shown and preferred, is afforded by a cushioned rectangular box 1, which at its four corners is mounted on casters 2, which adapt it to be moved` easily over the iioor. At one of its front corners the cushion of the box or seat-body 1 is preferably set in at 3, and at its diagonally opposite rear corner it is shown as notched to receive one member 4 of a pair of end boards or brackets4 5, the former of which is rigidly secured to the said seat-body 1. The end board or bracket 5 is rigidly secured to a wing 6, which in turn is connected by a hinge 7 to that rear corner of the seat-body 1 which is opposite to that corner to which the end board 4 is secured. The wing 6 is adapted to fold against the adjacent end of the seat-body 1 and is of such length that when thus folded it will direct the end board 5 into the depression 3 of said body 1, as shown in Fig'. 2 by full lines.

In the construction illustrated one of the caster-wheels 2 instead of being applied directly to seat-body 1 is applied to the lower end of the end board 4, and the end board 5 is preferably provided with a caster-wheel 8. For a purpose which will presently appear the end board 5 is pivotally supported from the iioor, and this is advisably accomplished by providing said board 5 at its lower end with a ball-equipped foot 9, which is loosely placed in the depression of a block 10, secured to the floor. When desired, said end board 5 may be readily detached from the floor-pivot and rested upon the floor with freedom for any desired movements.

To form the back of the cozy-corner seat under one adjustment and the body of the bed under another adjustment,I provide a so-called back member 11, which is considerably longer than the seat-body 1 and is made up of a relatively long and a relatively short section connected by one or more hinges 12, located approximately in line with that end of the body 1 to which the wing 6 is hinged. On its front face this folding sectional member 11 is cushioned and on its rear face is provided with a bed-spring 13, which spring and cushion are of course adapted to fold at the joint of the hinge 12.

To the ends of the back member 11 are rigidly secured laterally ofset hinge arms or projections 14, the projecting ends of which are pivotally attached at 15, one to each of the so-called end boards 4 5. The end boards 4 and 5 therefore afford supports for the sectional back member 11. The offset hingearms 14 when the back member 11 is straightened out, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, permit the same to be turned into a horizontal position overlying the seatbody 1. Under such movement the offset arms 14 carry the back member l1 high enough to prevent the cushions interfering with the folding movement thereof.

To support the forwardly-projecting edge of the downturned back member 11, a pair of folding legs 16 are provided. These legs 16 IOO are connected to the ends of said member 11 by a slot-and-pin joint 17, which permit pivotal and limited endwise movements of said legs with respect to said member 11. To lock said legs against accidental folding movements when the member 11 is turned down, the upper ends of said legs are preferably notched at 18 for engagement with lock-pins 19 on the ends of said member 11. Then the said member11 is raised slightly at its projecting edge, the legs 16 will drop far enough to disengage their notches 18 from the pins 19, and they may then be turned into a folded position, as indicated in Fig. 1.

When the device is folded to form a cozycorner seat, it is especially adapted to lit in the corner of a room. The pivot 9 1() shouldrbe so located that it will throw the seat into the corner when it is folded. To convert the device into a bed, the section of the seat-body 1 should be pulled out from the wall and away from the said pivot, and the pivot by holding back on the folding section will cause the same to straighten out and assume a position away from the wall. The straightened back-forming member 11 may, as before indicated, be then turned into ahorizontal position, thereby converting the device into a bed. To convert the device back into a cozy-corner seat, it is of course necessary first to turn the member 11 up into a vertical position and thereafter to push the device into the corner, under which movement it will fold up and form the cozycorner seat, as before described.

The device described has been built and has proved efiicient for the purposes had in view. It will of course be understood that it is capable of a large range of modifications within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.

Vhat I claim, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:

1. The combination with a seat-body, of a back member of greater length than said body, made up of hinged sections, the shorter of which is adapted to fold against one end of said bodymember, to form a cozy-corner seat, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a seat-body, of a back-forming member of greater length than the said body, made up of hinged sections, the shorter of which is adapted to fold against the end of said body, and which back member, when straightened out, is adapted to be turned into a horizontal position over the said body, to afford a bed, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a seat-body and an end wing hinged to one corner thereof, for folding movements against the end of said body, of end supports, one of which is rigidly secured to the free end of said wing, and a back member hinged to said end supports, for folding movements from an upright position into a horizontal position over said seat-body, and vice versa, and which back member is made up of hinged sections, one of which is adapted to be folded against the end of said seat-body, when in an upright position, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a seat-body and an end wing hinged to one corner thereof, of end supports, one of which is rigidly secured to the free end of said Wing, and a back member hinged to said end supports, by offset arms or projections, adapting it to be turned in a horizontal position over said seat-body, to afford a bed, and which back-forming member is formed by sections hinged approximately at one end of said seat-body, with the shorter section thereof adapted to be folded against the end of said seat-body, to afford a cozy-corner seat, when the said back member is in an upright position, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a seat-body, of a back member of greater length than said body, made up of sections hinged approximately at one end of said seat-body, with the shorter section adapted to fold against one end of said seat-body, to form a cozy-corner seat, said seat-body being movable over the floor, and the shorter section of said back member being supported by a iioor-pivot, substantially as described.

6. The combination with a seat-body, and an end wing' hinged to one corner thereof for folding movements against the end of said seat-body, of end supports, one of which is rigidly secured to the free end of said Wing', and is pivoted to the i'loor, and a back-forming member hinged to said end supports for folding' movements from an upright position into a horizontal position over said seat-body, and vice versa, and which back-forming member is made up of sections hinged approximately at one extremity of said seat-bod y, and with one section adapted to fold against the end thereof, when in an upright position, substantially as described.
