UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB LEWIN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF ANDl ALEXANDER BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 498,179, dated. May 23, 1893.
l Application filed February 10, 1893. Serial No. 461,804. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it'known that I, JACOB LEWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, 1n the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds and the invention consists in the novel features of construction pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in theannexed drawings in which- Figure 1, is a section along :t :x: showing the bed closed or folded. Fig. 2, is a similar section to Fig. l the bed being open. Fig. 3, isa section of the bed along y y Fig. l. Fig. 4is a section along .z .e Fig. 2.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a case or frame having its side walls provided with grooved guides B in which travel the connections or roller studs C supporting the bed frame section D which may be appropriately called the head section. The grooved guides B are at such an angle or incline as required for easy travel of section D. To the head section at E is jointed the intermediate section F to which at G is jointed the section H. The head section D being movably connected to the support or frameAand the sections F H being jointed as shown the sections can be readily folded or opened. To section H at I is jointed the top edge portion of a leg or support K. When the section H is swung down to the open or unfolded position the leg K swings on joint I so as toY come to rest on the iloor and support section H when lowered. To section- H at L is fulcrumed lever M N, the cord or connection O extending from lever arm M to the base or support A. As the section H is lowered the cord O is tightened so as to move arm N of the lever M N against the leg K and preventing said leg from closing or collapsing. When the section H is closed the cord O is slackened and the lever M N releases the leg K.
The section His provided with braces or arms P jointed at Q to the base or frame A so that the section H in opening and closing swings on the joint Q. The sections D F H when folded or closed will lie compactly together so as to occupy but little space while when opened or unfolded said sections can be made to form a bed of suitable length.
The leg K it is noticed is made in form of a desk and as the joint or pivot I will leave the part K to swing or remain in its vertical position as the section H opens or closes any contents of the desk K such as ink or papers will not be disturbed, scattered orspilled, The desk K can be made of any suitable form and provided with a cover or lid and with a drawer or like compartment to close up when not in use. The desk K has its joint I at such a point of adjustment that when the section H is closed the desk K will swing into j uxtaposition over the braces P thus securing a substantial and Workmanlike finish.
" A hook or catch R preferably made in form of a suitably hinged or swinging cover or lid on base A engages and holds the section H closed when desired and when in form of a cover also prevents dust or foreign matter falling into the bed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a case A, having its side walls provided with inclined grooved l guides B, a head section D, provided wi th studs C engaging the inclined grooved guides, the foot section H, provided with braces or arms P, pivotally connected with the base of the case, and an intermediate section F jointed to the head and foot sections, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a case A, having its side wallsV provided with inclined grooved guides B, a head section D, provided with studs C engaging the inclined grooved guides, the
swinging foot section H pivotally supported by the case, and the intermediate section F jointed to the head and foot sections, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a case A, having its sides provided with guides B, a head section D movably engaging the guides, a foot section H, provided with braces or arms P pivotally connected to the base of the case, an intermediate section F jointed to the head and foot sections, a support K hinged at its top edge portion to the foot section and lying over said braces or arms when the' foot section is folded into the case, and a lever M pivoted to IOO the fooi section and flexibly connected with the case, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination with L frame or supc port of a head section movably connected to said supporta foot Section and an intermediate section jointed to the head and foot sections said foot section being provided with braces or :mns jointed to the frame o1` sup- Io port and with a. desk jointed to the foot section in adjustment to come into j uxiaposition over the braces when the sections are folded, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing I5 witnesses.
