Description

s; 1. HAR'RlsuN &1. HEYMANN.
Wardrnhe-Bedsteads.-
N0.|51,020 V Patent'ed May 19,1874.
tinrrnn lSrA'riiis PATENT OFFICE.,
SAMUEL J. HARRISON AND JACOB HEYMANN, OF BOSTON, MASS.
llv'iPROVENiENT IN WARDROBE-BEDSTEADS.
Specification foriningpar of Letters Patent No. l 51,020, dated May 19, 1h74; lpplflhllild February 18, 1873.
To all whom fat may concern Be it known that we, SAML. J. HARIUSON and JACOB HEYMANN, both of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in XV ardr robe-Bedsteads, ot' which the following is a specification Our invention relates to certain improvements in that class of furniture known as wardrobe-bedstcads, and the object of our improvements is to render such bcdsteads, when folded together, more compact than those now in use, and also to so arrange the part containing the bed that it may be easily opened out and closed up 5 but that our invention may be fully understood, we will describe the same in detail by aid of the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a front view of a wardrobe-bedstead arranged according to our invention as it will appear when folded up. Fig. 2 is a side view, representing the' same opened outA ready for use. detail.
A is an upright frame, which forms an ornamental head-board to the piece of furniture when used as a bedstead, and into which the box B is folded up when the bed is not in use. This box is provided with a foot-board, C, hinged to the same. The fo0t-board C forms an extension of the box B, which fills up the space between the same and the frame A when the apparatus is folded up, as shown by Fig. 1. b is a catch, arranged to hold the footboard D in place when the bed is down. This foot-board D is provided with legs a a to support the outer end of the box B.
Our invention consists in the manner of pivoting the box B to the frame A, and in the arrangement ofthe boards D and E, whereby the working' parts of the device are` hidden from view.
F and G are slots formed on the inside of the frame A, and arranged at right angles to each other. j' and g are slides, arranged with capability of movement in the slots F G. d. and c are pivots, which pass through the sides of the box B, and are connected to the sliding pieces f and g. To the lower side of the box B, where these pivots are attached, are conducted cords r w, which pass down Figs. 3 and 4 `show parts in around pulleys h supported in the base of the frame A, up over pulleys M attached to the side of the frame A, then downward to the weight M, to which they are attached. The board D is hinged to the box B in such a manner as to fold up with the bed, and so that it in ay be thrown back, when the bed is down, to fill up the space between the box B and the board N, in which position it acts as the bolster. The part E is pivoted to the frame A, and is connected to the bottom of the box B by a sliding piece, P, which is arranged in connection with the guide p, so that the part E, while it always covers up the space between the box B and the base of the frame A, is also free to slide on the bottom of the Fig. 4.
When the bed is closed up, as shown in Fig. 1, this apparatus presents the appearance of an ornamental wardrobe, the footboard O filling up the space between the end of the box B containing the bed and the cap of the frame A. The legs of the foot-board, folding closely t0 the bottom of the box B, form ornamental pendants at the side of the same, and the part E lls up the space at lower part between the base of the frame A and the box B, thereby giving the appearance of the base of a wardrobe. This base may be provided with imitations of drawers to carry out the effect more fully. The under surface of the box B may have mirrors attached to it, and the vhole front may be otherwise ornamented. When the bed is down ready for use, the foot-board G is fastened in position by the catch b, andthe hinged piece D is turned back to form the bolster and' to cover up the space between the box B and the crosspiece N.
The operation of our method of pivoting the box B with the frame A (shown in detail at Fig. 3) is as follows: Vhen the bedstead is being folded up, the piece f slides downward toward the bottom of its groove F, and the piece g at the same time slides across in its groove G, and vice versa, when the bedstead is lowered. By this means the box B is thrown out when it is down, so as to give a greater length of bed than would be the ease if a single pivot were used, While at the same time the box B folds oompaotly into the frame A.
It Will readily be seen that by the arrangement shown the counter-balance Weights M and the cords and pulleys Will be completely hidden.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the frame A, provided with slots F G and box B, connected to sliding pieces f g by pivots d e, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the frame A and box B, the board D, part E P, and guide p, substantially as set forth.
