JOHN H. LASKEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO ISAAC F. DOBSON, OF SAME PLACE, AND BENJAMIN F. DAVIES, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
'MANTEL-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,032, dated March 1'7, 1885.
Application filed March 24, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern! and working in a slot in-the link. These Be it known that 1, JOHN H. LASKEY, a citi parts are designed, mainly, to support the bed zen of the United States, residing at Boston, and its frame during the operations of openin the county of Suffolk and State of Massaing and closing the same, and to give an easy chusetts, have invented certain new and useful swinging movement while the normal sup- 55 Improvementsin Mantel-Beds; and I do hereports are not operative. They serve also, in by declare that the same are fully described connection with the guides and without any in the following specification and illustrated counter-balance, to maintain the bed when in the accompanying drawings. spread at the proper distance from the floor The object of my invention is to improve and from the rear of the case, and when folded 6o mantel-bedsthat class of beds arranged to to bring the frame into the precise position to turn up on edge against a wall. close the front of the case.
My improvements relate to the suspension The weight of the bed and frame when foldof the bed-frame by swinging bars to rear ed is borne by two knobs or rollers, E, pro- 1 and bottom supports therefor working in jecting from the ends of the frame, and hav- 5 grooves in the inclosing-case, and to peculiar ing a rest, 9, in the bottom of oblique grooves folding front legs whereby the opened bed is G, formed in the adjacent inner faces of the in part supported. casing. Such points of rest are near the front My invention consists in the devices and lower corners of the case ends, and the rollers combinations of devices set forth in the ap- E are located at the lowermost corner of the 70 pended claims. frame ends, as shown, so that when folded the In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective entire front of the case is closed by the bottom view of my improved bed spread or opened of the bed-frame, and the center of gravity is for use. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical secback of the point of support, thus tending to 2 5 tion of the case, showing the end of the frame prevent accidental opening of the bed. The 7 5 and illustrating the various features of my infront of the case or frame is also provided with vention. Fig. 3 is an end view of the case, a lock and key of approved construction, thus indicating in dotted lines the position of the securing the bed against unauthorized use. parts when folded. Fig. 4 is an elevation of The bed is preferably of woven orinterlinked one of my improved beds, showing the case wire suspended horizontally from the ends of s closed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailof the the frame B and supporting a suitable matfolding leg. Fig. 6 is a front view of one of tress. the legs and a part of the frame. The rollers E give afirm support to'the back A is the case in which the bed is inclosed side of the bed when spread for use. During 5 when folded, the top forming a horizontal the operation of opening, these rollers move 85 shelf or mantel, M, projecting as desired, the upwardly and rearwardly in the grooves G as casing being plain or suitably ornamented. guides until the upper ends thereof are reached B is the bed-frame, the bottom of which and the rollers enter rests or offsets 9, so closes the front of the case when folded, owing shaped with relation to the guiding portion of 40 to the peculiar hinging, while the sides and the groove as to form rests to retain the roll- 90 ends fit closely Within corresponding parts of ers until the frame is drawn slightly forward the case, leaving merely room at the ends for and lifted up to its front edge. This action the supporting devices. does not occur in the use of the bed, and the My bed -.frame is not, like former ones, natural tendency of the parts as I have ar- 5 mounted onafixed pivot, butreceives aswingranged them is to keep the rollers in the re; 9 5
ing support from two slotted metallic links or cesses g. hinges, C, each pivoted at one end to the end The front side of the bed receives its suppiece of the folding frame at a point just back port when open from two folding legs, H, pivof its center, and supported at the other end otcd to the outer ends of the frame B, and yet by a pin, D, fixed in the end wall of the case so constructed as to be very firm and. to sus- 10o tain the weight of the bed and its occupant without strain on the pivots of the legs, and to provide for folding them compactly.
Each leg is formed at its upper end with a three-way slot, h, through which passes the pivot I, by which it is secured loosely to the end of the frame. The upper part of the leg curves sharply outward from this slotted end, and then inward, so as to bring the knee K beneath the bottom of the opened frame, near its end. This knee has a cushion, of rubber, leather, or felt, to prevent noise and injury to the frame. From the knee downward the leg 'is nearly or quite straight, and the weight borne by the legs comes mainly upon the cushion and lower part of the leg, and not largely upon the pivots I.
The; legs fold between the ends of the folding frame and those of the upright case, and the slots 12 permit this by enabling each leg, when the front of the bed is slightly raised, to drop down until the pivot I is in the upper part of the slot, when the knee K can clear the lower outer corner of the frame B and the leg Swing outward and around into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, when the rearward portion of the three-way slot permits the neck of the pivot I to enter it and allows the leg to fold more compactly.
Between the mantel M and the space into which the bed folds I provide with my narrow beds drawers or a shelf, N with a hinged door, I], in front of it. This inclosure affords space for storage of pillows, bedding, or other articles.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the casing having guide-grooves closed at each end, the lower end abutments thereof forming rests, of the bed-frame having projections which enter the grooves, and the links 0, pivoted at one end to the casing and at the other end loosely pivoted to the frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the casing and bed frame pivoted thereto, of the legs H, loosely pivoted to the sides of the frame, said legs having offset-knees K, forming a projection to engage with the frame when frame is turned down, substantially as stated.
3. The combination, with the casing and bed-frame pivoted thereto, of the legs H, having three-way slots in their upper ends, a pivot passing loosely through said slot, said legs curving back from the pivot and then curving forward, and being provided with the cushioned projection K, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. LASKEY.
